Mells writer celebrates 100 years of Ladybird Books

HUNTINGRaven Books  will be launching a local writer’s work to celebrate 100 years of Ladybird children’s books.

Lorraine Johnson, from Mells, has written a history of the brand based on research from her doctorate thesis.

The book is titled ‘The Ladybird Story’ and traces the history of the Ladybird venture from its beginnings in the early 20th century, up to the turn of the millenium.

It will be published by the British Library this September, and was co-written by Brian Alderson, a writer of articles and monographs on the history of children’s books.

Ladybird Books began in World War One, but became a household name in the 1940s with Bunnykin’s Picnic Party. It now produces popular brands Peppa Pig and In The Night Garden.

Lorraine, who has lived in Mells for nine years said, “I chose the bookshop in Frome for the launch as I thought it would be really good to support local business.

“We moved to this area in 2005 and really love living here. Frome is such a great town with all its independent shops and with such a variety of events and activities.”

Hunting Raven Books, on Cheap Street, Frome, will be launching ‘The Ladybird Story’ instore on Sunday 7th September at 12.15pm.

Lorraine will be talking about the book, there will be a Question and Answer session, and an opportunity to buy a signed copy of the book.
