Frome Community Education opens new hub

Frome Development CIC has awarded Frome Community Education a £7000 grant  to set up an IT hub upstairs at the Cheese & Grain. 

It’s good news for people who do not have access to a computer at home and for those who need to learn how to use one to find work.

From the beginning of this month a tutor/mentor will be available four mornings a week to help people take their first steps with a computer, access the Internet, learn the basic IT skills needed for job search, make a CV, create an email address and learn how to send attachments.

Tutor Sue Klepper said, “We are so thrilled to be able to offer this service for free.  I have worked with jobseekers for several years and lack of computer skills has been one of the main stumbling blocks for somebody who has perhaps lost their job and may not have needed to use a computer in the past.

“People who have been made redundant or have been job seeking for some time will know that a computer is essential. If you are a little older you may realise that you need some IT skills to be able to pay your bills or keep in touch.

“We’re giving people a chance to learn some IT for free in the centre of town with the help of Knightstone Housing and Aster Communities to support their own residents and the wider community.”

The Job Club run by Vista will be available on Mondays between 10.00am and 12.00noon in the hub, with Alexis Bradley on hand to give help and advice.  In addition to the free Tuesday and Wednesday morning drop-ins, Frome Community Education will also be offering a session on Friday mornings aimed at women returners: mothers or carers who wish to return to the workplace and need to gain some IT skills for work.

Organiser Margaret Binney said, “Whether you are a single parent or just someone who needs to learn something about computer programs there should be a slot for you at the new IT hub at the Cheese & Grain.”
