The dedication of the Lions Club of Frome Tree of Remembrance positioned outside Rook Lane Chapel in Frome, attracted a good crowd last Thursday 27th November.
Club secretary, Lion Chris Bailey Green, welcomed the attendees and introduced the Rev. Colin Horn who conducted the service during which carols were sung to the accompaniment of Frome Town Youth Band.
The event was rounded off by the serving of mince pies and mulled wine and soft drinks.
Gordon Lee said, “The sparkling lights on the tree represent the loved ones of residents of Frome and district who are no longer with us.”
It’s not too late to sponsor a light. Readers wishing to do so should contact either Lion Keith Mcleod on 01373-454318 or email: keith.mcleod@frome%20lions.org.uk or Lion Clive Smith on 01373 466303 or email: clive.smith@frome lions.org.uk.
The Lions have now turned their attention to promoting the Figgy Pudding Christmas Concert being held at Rook Lane Chapel, Bath Street, Frome, on Sunday 14th December at 7.30pm.
The event, which is being supported by Bath Building Society, is a Christmas entertainment with songs and readings for everyone, traditional carols, folk carols, Music Hall and Victorian parlour songs, set in a warm and humorous context of words from Thomas Hardy, John Clare, Joyce Grenfell, Peter Levi’s magical ‘In Midwinter’ and Belloc’s similarly mysterious ‘Twelfth Night’.
Saki’s ‘Reginald’s Christmas’ is always a favourite with the audience. Music includes Byrd’s ‘My Little Sweet Darling’, Lenox Berkley’s ‘I sing of a maiden’ and Marenzio’s beautiful Christmas Madrigal ‘Hodie Christus natus est’.
Sally Beamish’s ‘In the stillness’ and Judith Bingham’s ‘In Mary’s Love’ remain firm favourites, and this year’s new carol is by award-winning young composer Oswain Park, a setting of the delightful Francis Quarles poem ‘on the infancy of our Saviour’.
All concludes with spoken and sung blessings on one and all for Christmas and the New Year.
Tickets at £20, to include a glass of wine and mince pie during the interval, are available from Lion Roger Windley on 01373 467196 or on email at roger.windley@frome lions.org.uk. The proceeds will go to the Lions Club of Frome 50th Year Charity Fund.
