This year Frome once again welcomes the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth on Saturday 21st March at the Memorial Theatre; promoted by the Frome branch of the Royal Naval Association and supported by the Sea Cadets of TS Achilles Trowbridge.
This year is a special occasion as it marks the 20th anniversary of this fundraising event which has sponsored various charities and activities in the area over the years.
The evening’s entertainment was the vision and hard work of one man, Shipmate Ken Ring, who died in November 2013 shortly after receiving his long awaited Arctic Star Medal for services on the arctic convoys during World War 2.
Mike King of the Frome branch of the Royal Naval Association explains, “In 1995 Ken felt the loss of Frome’s adopted warship HMS/M Thunderbolt in the Mediterranean on 14th March 1943 should be remembered, and came up with the idea of a concert. Originally this was to be a one off event but it was so successful here we are about to celebrate the 20th concert.
“Over the years thousands of Frome residents, along with people from all over the south west, have annually filled the Memorial Theatre to hear musicians renowned for their range of music and their multi instrumental talents.
“The Royal Naval Association in Frome are determined to continue with the gift that Ken Ring left behind. We invite the people of Frome, who have supported us during the last 20 years, to join us once again to experience this wonderful evening of music, pomp and humour.”
