Frome Community Garden’s Group, Apothecary Garden Frome and Incredible Edible Frome are working together to design and create a beautiful new ‘Health and Well-being Garden’ in Frome’s very own Victoria Park.
The organisers said, “Frome Town Council has been very supportive and provided a fantastic large space for us to transform. This space includes the underused pitch and putt green in the western area of the park, near the gate to Weymouth Road.
“The Health and Well-being Garden will include a medicinal growing space, an edible growing space, a space for education and keep fit classes. It will be accessible to all and provide a valuable and productive community resource.
“Part of the design process and community consultation, which is drawing on permaculture principles, is the exciting design competition for children and young people.
“At the Growing Frome Potato Day and Seed Swap on Sunday 8th February, the Victoria Park Health and Well-Being Garden children’s design competition was judged by the community attending the event.
“The children were really inspired! All of the entries were of a fantastic quality and the designers hope to use elements from them all! All entrants have received a lovely certificate to mark their participation, however some of the designs were really outstanding, and on Thursday 12th March Frome’s Mayor, cllr Peter Macfadyen, sporting an Incredible Edible Frome chain of office, awarded prizes to those chosen by the public. Prizes included some wonderful children’s gardening books donated by Hunting Raven Books.
“The outstanding entries were; Jessica Brown age 8, Sean Westmacott-Walker age 6, Lottie Allin age 6, Steiner School Class 4 age 8/9, Gabriella Brown Macey Light, Paige Ellis and Paige Davies ages 8/9 from Nunney 1st school, and Xanthe and Jessica age 9 from the 8th Brownies.”
The designers wish to thank all of the 66 children involved and their adult helpers, they also hope to create plenty of opportunities for the children to be involved in the creation of the garden in the future.
