Frome Active Sports Fest a hit despite the rain

The first Frome Active Sports Fest took place on Sunday 29th March and more than 200 families turned out despite the driving rain and the clocks going forward to take place in a number of sporting activities.

Over three sites, the football club, Selwood School and the leisure centre a large number of tasters were available to children of all ages to come and take part in all that the Frome clubs have to offer.

The archery, originally scheduled for outside at Selwood school was moved to the leisure centre sports hall, and was extremely popular, with Frome Town Archers stating that they wouldn’t have been able to accommodate too many more participants.  Frome Canoe Club also had to close their books with lots of children wanting to participate in the pool in the Kayaks.

Sarah Cruwys, manager of Frome Leisure Centre said that she was extremely pleased with how the event had run and would be more than happy to see the event return to the site.

The street dance crew had kicked things off with Amy Rowe putting the kids and Mayor Peter Macfadyen through their breakdancing paces.  Tennis, badminton, judo, boxing, football skills, community games and gymnastics were also popular.

Matti Hemmings, BMX whizz, had to perform his demonstrations and workshops inside at Selwood School but was a trooper, instead working with children in ones and two throughout the day due to space constraints.

The intrepid orienteers officiated by Aveling Leisure braved the weather with the fastest team for orienteering being ‘The Spuds’. – Louis and Sholto Walker having the most points correct.

Rachel Griffin from Frome Children’s Festival, organisers of the event said, “We are delighted with the response and want to thank all the groups who gave up their time to support the event.  The feedback has been brilliant and we would really like to incorporate elements of this event in the Children’s Festival in the summer – Watch this space for details!”
