Rotarians Race to Help Transform RUH Cancer Care

The Rotary Clubs of Frome and Frome Selwood recently joined forces to hold a Charity Race Night in support of The Forever Friends Appeal’s RUH Cancer Care Campaign. 

The event was a huge success and, at a cheque presentation last week, the two clubs handed over an amazing donation of £2065 to Appeal staff.

The Race Night, held at Frome Market in March, was a memorable event enjoyed by everyone in attendance. Each table (named after famous racecourses) battled it out to pick the winners in a series of races, played on a big screen. Horses were auctioned in each race with owners of the Champion horse winning prize money, and individuals placed bets on their favourites.

A competitive atmosphere soon emerged, as certain tables and individuals streaked ahead, whilst others seemed to fall at the first (and every subsequent) hurdle! Despite this lack of success for some guests, spirits were high and a lovely evening was had by all, with many winners donating their winnings back to support this worthwhile local cause. Guests were also treated to a delicious three-course dinner to keep their strength up ready for the fierce competition ahead.

Community fundraiser for The Forever Friends Appeal, Lydia McGivern, who attended the race night commented, “It was an absolutely fantastic event with everyone getting so involved and enthusiastic. People’s competitive streaks (including my own!) definitely started to shine through, leading to an evening of much amusement and laughter.

“We at The Forever Friends Appeal are so grateful to both of these rotary clubs for choosing to support us with this event. Their efforts will help to transform cancer care for thousands of patients and their families, and we honestly cannot thank them enough.”

President of the Rotary Club of Frome Selwood, Ken Fricker stated, “On the night Rotarians and guests thoroughly enjoyed losing their shirts on the races for this worthwhile Forever Friends cause. Together we can make a world where cancer no longer means living with fear, without hope, or worse.”

Jerry Lewis, President of the Rotary Club of Frome said, “The motto of Rotary International is Service Before Self. We as Rotarians give some of our spare time doing what we can to help people less fortunate than ourselves and occasionally hold fundraising events to allow us to do it.

“We were delighted on this occasion to donate all of the profits from a race night to such a worthy cause as the Forever Friends Appeal.”
