Charity tea with Mayor for Whizz-Kidz

Homemade cakes and tea were served throughout the afternoon of Wednesday 8th July at The Southern Co-operative Funeralcare branch at 1 Nunney Road in Frome, to raise funds for the charity Whizz-Kidz.

The afternoon included a raffle for an array of tempting prizes donated by local businesses, which was drawn by Mayor of Frome, Cllr Kate Bielby.

Prizes included a three course meal for two with bottle of Prosecco at The Artisan, a hamper filled with food and drink from The Southern Co-operative, two theatre tickets for West Side Story at the Merlin Theatre in August and more.

Whizz-Kidz provides disabled children and young people with vital mobility equipment, opportunities to meet and have fun, as well as training to help them gain skills and look forward to a bright future.

Jayne Keitch and Lisa Smart, funeral co-ordinators at the branch said, “We baked like mad to make lots of cakes for our guests to enjoy and really appreciated the donations from fellow local businesses in Frome and the Mayor’s support for the raffle. With everyone’s help, we have raised much needed funds for our charity partner, Whizz-Kidz!”

The charity estimates there are still over 70,000 children in the UK waiting for the right equipment to fit their young lives. Since the partnership began in May 2014, The Southern Co-operative has raised over £250,000 for Whizz-Kidz with the support of its customers, members and colleagues.

The branch, which was officially opened in April by the former Mayor of Frome, Cllr Peter Macfadyen, is also a collection point for Fair Frome, where local people can drop off food donations that funeral co-ordinators Jayne and Lisa will pass onto the charity. The Southern Co-operative Funeralcare also donated £250 to Fair Frome towards its next community dining event to celebrate the branch opening.
