PUPILS at Selwood Academy could soon have a brand new artifical football pitch after the school was granted permission to build its own sports court.
Mendip District Council recently gave the go-ahead for the school to construct a ‘3G’ artificial turf pitch, along with floodlights and changing rooms.
The area, which is currently a grass field, can be converted into an artificial pitch to be used for football, hockey, and subdivided into tennis courts.
The pitch will be floodlit, fenced, and have a 144sqm changing room block. It would be expected to be available for community use, and the floodlights could extend its opening hours until 10pm.
It is hoped that the pitch will help the school to better meet its sports curriculum, and will also help towards Somerset Football Association’s strategic need for football pitches in the Frome area.
