David Warburton MP for Somerton & Frome joined nearly 1500 quizmasters nationwide to host the first ever World’s Biggest Pub Quiz on Sunday 7th February.

The event was a unique fundraising event taking place simultaneously in hundreds of pubs across the country.

David Warburton MP hosted the quiz at The White Hart Inn, Trudoxhill, where 94 locals sharpened their pencils at 7.30pm on Sunday to answer six rounds of challenging questions.

A total of 1451 UK pubs registered to take part in the inaugural event – organised by PubAid and JustGiving – making a Guinness Book World Record attempt for the Largest Multi-Venue Quiz. Each pub taking part was given an identical set of questions, to commence at the same time on the same day.

The White Hart Inn’s chosen charities for the fundraising event were Positive Action on Cancer, Kenya-based Mama Upendo Children’s Trust and Crohn’s & Colitis UK.  Pub operator Marston’s plc doubled the total funds raised by the White Hart Inn, making a grand total of £1690 raised on the night.

David Warburton said, “This really was an excellent event! To be part of the first ever World’s Biggest Pub Quiz at the White Hart Inn in Trudoxhill – and to attempt an historic World Record while at the same time helping to raise much-needed funds for Positive Action on Cancer, Mama Upendo Children’s Trust and Crohn’s & Colitis UK – it was fabulous. Being quizmaster for the night was of course a huge privilege, a challenge and certainly quite a bit of fun!”

Graeme Barry, landlord of the White Hart Inn added, “PubAid is a valuable volunteer organisation which does a great job highlighting the fundraising work done by local pubs and their customers – a staggering £100 million raised every year for charities across the country.

“With David Warburton as our quizmaster everyone at the White Hart had a fantastic night. I’m grateful to PubAid for organising such a brilliant event, all the staff at the White Hart for their help – especially Leona McDonald – and of course a huge thank you to Marston’s for doubling the funds we raised.”

Following the quiz The White Hart presented a raffle, with prizes donated by Bay Tree Food Company, Centaur Services, Clicks Research (clicksresearch.com), Mama Upendo (mamatrust.org), Marston Foods, Neal’s Yard Remedies, Sun Chemical, We Hear You (wehearyou.org.uk), The White Hart, Trudoxhill, Wiltshire Smokehouse and Zara’s Health and Beauty, Shepton Mallet.
