ding! Riding into a positive future with community bicycle repair pop-ups

A MOBILE community bike workshop for Frome is encouraging local people to get on their bikes and are helping with their pop-up bike repair days in May.

Set up during the pandemic last year, ‘ding’ has been helping people get back out in nature and having fun on their bikes. And at their pop-up bike repair days, made possible by funding from the Postcode Lottery, ding is hoping to create a “ripple effect of kindness and support” in the cycling community.

A spokesperson for the initiative explains, “The ding team are passionate about creating a confident cycling community and bringing hands-on bike repair workshops to Frome.

“One of ding’s goals is to make cycling more accessible, by empowering people through learning basic repairs for their bikes with the help and expertise from Alex, a professional mechanic.

“Ding are  busy making plans to run more ABC (air, brakes and chain) workshops, enabling locals to learn new skills and then share them with their friends and family.

“Ding recently received funding from the Postcode Lottery to help us run monthly pop-up bike repair days throughout April and May, aiming to pop up in many community spaces such as the Welsh Mill Hub, the bandstand at Victoria Park and The Mount.

“If you have a bike that’s in need of some TLC, simply book a slot at one of our events.

“Ding supports a pay forward scheme, to enable accessibility to all. The simplest way to define “pay it forward” is that when someone does something for you, instead of paying that person back directly, you pass it on to another person instead.

“Creating a ripple effect of kindness and support. Therefore, at ding your repair has already been paid for, so we invite you to PAY FORWARD for the next person.

“It’s pay what you can and we offer a transparent price system on our website so you can see where your money goes.

“Ding will be popping up in Frome on 1st May, check out the calendar of events at https://dingfrome.co.uk.

“We would love to invite you to share it widely and don’t forget to follow us on Instagram and Facebook!”
