A series of events are due to be held in August to commemorate Victory over Japan (VJ) Day.
Organised by the Frome branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL), the events on 15th August will mark the end of World War Two in the Far East and Pacific, following well-attended ceremonies in May commemorating the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day.
Frome RBL coordinator Jane Norris said, “We will mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day in a more sombre mood than we marked VE Day in May, but it is important that we mark the moment – never forgetting the ‘forgotten army’ and those who served in the Far East and Pacific. It’s likely that more events and information will follow, but please join us for the following events.”
Thursday 14th August at 6pm – Eve of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day:
RBL Service of Thanksgiving at St John the Baptist Church, Frome, led by Jonathan Cheal.
This service will acknowledge the many who served in the Far East and Pacific, the surrender of Japan on 15th August 1945, Victory over Japan Day, and the end of World War Two. Flags of the allied forces of the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India and Nepal, who were instrumental in securing victory, will be draped at St John’s Church.
Friday 15th August – 80th Anniversary of VJ Day:
At 11am, a short commemoration service will be held at the Frome Memorial, featuring standards and the playing of The Last Post.
From 6pm, VE and VJ bunting will be on display from the Frome Memorial to St John’s Church, illuminated as darkness falls.
“Then from 7pm, join us in quiet reflection at the Frome Memorial. If possible, bring a lantern (of any kind) to help us create a ‘light of hope’—a light that keeps burning in remembrance,” said Jane.
Autumn – date to be confirmed:
Frome RBL is also organising a trip to the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, a place of pilgrimage for veterans, their families and friends. Details will be publicised once confirmed.
