Fundraising by Frome Lions Club has helped local people access cancer screening, supported young people and contributed to health services, with £71,000 donated to good causes over the past year.
The club’s fundraising has supported a Prostate Cancer Screening Day attended by 300 men, contributed towards a new CT scanner at the Royal United Hospital in Bath and a project by Friends of Frome Hospital to upgrade the town’s defibrillators.
Youth projects were another focus, with £10,600 distributed to 16 recipients to support summer and after-school activities, equipment and training bursaries.
Other initiatives supported included Dorothy House Hospice, Hope for Tomorrow, the South West Eating Disorders Association and Frome-based cancer counselling charity We Hear You.
Lions’ treasurer Frank Collins said, “As a club we are delighted to have been able to support multiple charities, community groups and community projects for the benefit of so many individuals and families in and around our town. Making a difference to individual lives and local communities is what the Lions Club is all about.
The money was raised through events including quizzes, the annual sponsored swim and a golf day during Allison Rumming’s year as president.
Frank added, “Our achievement in Allison’s year was the result of a lot of hard work by the Lions members with support for several of our projects from the Richard Oatley Foundation. None of this however would have been possible without the generous support given to us by the people and businesses of Frome, for which we are extremely grateful.”
Allison has handed over the role of president to Shaun McCabe following a dinner at The Full Moon in Rudge recently.
She thanked her officers and fellow Lions for their support during her year and paid tribute to the public in Frome and surrounding villages for their generosity.
Shaun said he intended to continue supporting the current Lions projects in hand and hopefully develop some new ones.
