A BBC Antiques Roadshow expert will explore the history and psychology of collecting at a talk in Frome.
Marc Allum, who has been an expert on the programme for nearly 30 years, will speak to the Frome Society on Saturday 14th November.
A professional auctioneer and antiques consultant, Marc began collecting as a youngster and describes himself as a “collectorholic”.
His talk will explore the origins of collecting, from ancient civilisations and cabinets of curiosity to the creation of major museums and the people behind them.
Organisers say, “The acquisition of his varied and eclectic knowledge has taken Marc on a personal journey over the decades, prompting him to examine the very origins of man’s obsession with this particularly human condition.
“His talk will explore everything from our ancient ancestors to the development of cabinets of curiosity, the formation of our great museums and the famous and infamous collectors who founded them.
“Marc will also delve into the myths behind powerful objects, the psychology that drives people and the sheer fascination and compulsion that comes with the desire to acquire things.”
The talk takes place in the Assembly Rooms at the rear of Frome Memorial Theatre, starting at 2.30pm.
Visitors are welcome, but advance booking is required through fromesociety.org.uk. Tickets cost £5 for non-members.
