Town council supports Saxonvale Training Centre

Frome Town Council has agreed to a subsidy to enable the good work of the Somerset Skills & Learning CIC (SSL) to continue at the Saxonvale Training Centre on land owned by the Council.

Only a peppercorn rent will be charged when a new tenancy agreement is completed with SSL, a not-for-profit social enterprise.  This is expected to save the tenant in the region of £8,500 p.a. and enable SSL’s resources to be ploughed into the delivery of its services.

The Saxonvale Training Centre plays an important role in improving the employability of young people and adults alike.   Over the last 2 years, SSL has supported 195 learners to achieve qualifications.

The help that adult learners can obtain includes; counselling, computing skills, maths and English, adult apprenticeships and courses to improve access to Higher Education.

The CIC also supports 16-18 year olds with; vocational study programmes, learning to work/traineeships for those that would otherwise not be in employment, education or training and 16-18 apprenticeships.

A wide range of other organisations are using the Training Centre as a regular resource. These include groups that support adults with learning and other disabilities back into employment.

Commenting on the decision, cllr Toby Eliot, Mayor of Frome said, “This is not a particular project for the Town Council but a decision that allows really important services in our community to continue. It is essentially a grant in kind and we’re happy to support the work of Somerset Skills and Learning.

“The tenancy agreement also lets either SSL or the Town Council make changes in a short time scale meaning that we still have flexibility over any future Saxonvale development.”

  • Frome impress against higher league Salisbury

Pre-season friendly: Saturday 25th July
Frome Town 3-0 Salisbury City

Frome Town delivered another victory in pre-season, this time against higher league opposition in Salisbury, as they ran out 3-0 winners in front of the Badgers Hill faithful.

Brian Dutton’s side fashioned a good chance to open the scoring ten minutes into the game when a cross came in from the left searching for Jaiden Bartolo but Kyle Phillips was very quick off his line to gather the ball.

The first Frome chance came in the 20th minute after a great ball from George Dowling to find Zack Ali down the left. The full-back continued his run into the box and his effort was a whisker past the far post.

Salisbury then hit the bar with a Harry Thomas header from a corner before the hosts opened the scoring two minutes before half-time. It was Archie Ferris with a neat pass into Zac Drew down the right and the number 10 showed great composure to poke the ball past Will Henry in goal to give the Dodge the lead going into the break.

  • Residents rally to save 300-year-old pub

Local residents are rallying to save a historic pub in East Woodlands, which has been at the centre of village life for generations.

The Horse and Groom closed in 2020 during the Covid pandemic.

The newly formed Friends of the Horse and Groom group is seeking Asset of Community Value (ACV) status through Somerset Council, which would give the community an opportunity to explore buying the pub.

The pub was run for around 20 years by Rick Squire, known as Rickie, and his partner Kathy Barrett. In March 2020, Rick suffered multiple strokes after becoming seriously ill during an evening service and died two weeks later. Following his death and the pressures created by the pandemic, Kathy made the decision to close the pub.

Since my last column we have seen many events in Frome, including Frome Pride’s parade and the beginning of the Frome Festival.

The parade was the first stand-alone parade since Frome Pride’s inception in 2022. It was a joyous procession ending outside the library for music and speeches, stopping first in the Market Place for dancing and singing led by Ginny of Mojo Moves.

Frome Festival kicked off its 25th anniversary year with the now traditional Food Feast. If the queues at the stalls were anything to go by then it was a huge success.
