There’s a chance to see a Handel opera recorded live at Glyndebourne in 2015 and now screened at the Merlin on Thursday 26th July at 6.30pm.
In Handel’s Saul. David has vanquished the giant Goliath, but not everyone rejoices in his victory. Jealous of the young warrior, King Saul turns against him, descending into violent, destructive madness that forces his children to choose between loyalty and love, tearing both a family and a nation apart.
Handel’s vision of a Lear-like king is astonishing in its psychological complexity, offering a musical portrait of mental collapse few have since matched. Combined with thrilling choruses that exploit the virtuosic potential of their singers, exquisite arias and bold orchestration filled with unusual instruments, it creates a Biblical drama of truly Shakespearean scope.
On Saturday 28th July, Andre Rieu and the Johann Strauss Orchestra broadcast live in concert direct from Rieu’s home town of Mastricht.
Set against the incredible backdrop of the medieval town square, fans flock annually from all corners of the world to watch André perform with his 60-piece Johann Strauss Orchestra, as well as sopranos, tenors, and some very special guests. The concerts are packed full of humour, fun and emotion for all ages.
Good Morning Britain presenter Charlotte Hawkins hosts the presentation, interviewing fans and soaking up the joyous atmosphere that bursts right through the cinema screen – as well as catching an exclusive chat with André the moment he steps off stage!

SUMMER’S here – and there’s nothing like enjoying a performance on the Merlin’s ECOS amphitheatre when the weather is fine. Bring a picnic, rugs and cushions and hope this warm, dry summer continues.
There’s one for all the family on Friday 27th July at 6.00pm when Folksy Theatre presents ‘The Princess and the Giant.’
Princess Sophie is fed up. She’s exhausted and it’s all because the grumpy old giant can’t sleep – his stomps and stamps keep everyone awake all night. But Princess Sophie is a resourceful sort of girl and, as she reads her favourite book of fairy tales, she wonders if she might just have the answer.
Based on the children’s book by Caryl Hart, illustrated by Sarah Warburton, Folksy’s production is filled with music, puppetry and wonderful characters and is an experience not to be missed!
Then, on Wednesday 1st August at 7.00pm, the same company returns with a production of William Shakespeare’s Love’s Labours Lost, also on ECOS.The King of Navarre and his lords swear off food, women, and sleep in order to study for three years. No sooner have they made their oath, when the Princess of France arrives on business, with her ladies-in-waiting. How will the King and his Lords’ resolve hold up? This wonderful Shakespeare comedy is filled with Folksy’s touch of live music, audience interaction and downright silliness and also suitable for all the family.
