FROME authors Suzy and Neil Howlett, have something to smile about – their light-hearted and witty novel for adults, ‘Return to Kirrin’, has proved to be the surprise best-selling book in Frome’s Hunting Raven bookshop this year, ahead of all the big national blockbusters.
Suzy says, “People are really enjoying our cracking tale which focuses on those well-known Kirrin cousins, Julian, Dick, Anne and George (though sadly not Timmy the dog). It’s just right for a summer holiday read. These characters were loved by so many of us when we were children, and now they (like us) are all grown up with awkward children of their own, and arguing over a new business venture for Kirrin Island. There is mystery, romance, dodgy police techniques of the seventies, plenty of boats, and a touch of political scandal – all set in 1979 as Mrs Thatcher comes to power and Ford Capris rule the roads.”
Suzy, who also writes for The Little Things magazine, adds that the Hunting Raven bookshop has been a fantastic support to her, and many other local writers. “Mind you,” she says, “I have just read Crysse Morrison’s brand-new book ‘Frome Unzipped’, and I think it is set to become the next local bestseller, as it’s a corker!
“We are lucky to have so much writing talent in Frome, and a great place for anyone to develop their skills is the Frome Writers’ Collective, which has a summer bootcamp offering peer support, and meeting on Thursdays through the summer.”
