A Frome technology company has launched a new social distancing monitoring system that will enable organisations to re-open public and enclosed areas safely as the country begins its long journey out of lockdown.
Level Five Supplies, based at Welshmill Hub, is using state-of-the-art technology based on the most up-to-date driverless car research.
“The new application allows organisations to measure the distance between any individuals in real-time, along with speed, trajectory, and a count of other pedestrians in an area, whether indoors, outdoors, a simple courtyard or complex shopping mall,” says Alex Lawrence-Berkeley, founder of Level Five Supplies.
“It has already been used in Asia which is further along the COVID-19 trajectory. The South Korean Government has installed the system in and around municipal buildings and infrastructure, including airports.
“Social distance monitoring is becoming the buzz phrase of getting out and beginning the long painful journey back to what might approach normality, at least before a mass-produced vaccine is available. It is therefore critical that where the public coalesce in densely populated areas – shopping centres, reception and lobby areas, airports and at gatherings – that social distancing is measured in order to limit the spread of the virus.

Level Five Supplies was founded by Alex Lawrence-Berkeley in November 2018 to help small companies and academics get access to autonomy-enabling technology at an affordable price point. ![Town-wide programme brings month of social activities in May
A month-long programme of activities and events is set to take place across the town in May as part of an initiative encouraging residents to connect with themselves, each other and local places.
The scheme, Frome Connects, will run throughout the month and includes a mix of social activities, creative events and informal meet-ups in community spaces.
Highlights include the return of Dress Up Fridays, which began during lockdown and invites people to wear formal clothing or fancy dress and turn the town into their catwalk each Friday.
Set-piece moments include a Kate Bush-themed flashmob (Running Up That [Catherine] Hill) on 30th May, followed by a bell peal at St John’s Church where the bells will play Running Up That Hill.
There will also be a whole-town drone photo on Friday 30th May, with everyone encouraged to ‘look up’ at around 12.30pm.
