FROME’S ‘Somerset Stallion’, professional boxer Ryan Wheeler, has launched a series of monthly challenges to help people keep active and raise money for charity.
Created in October in partnership with his girlfriend Jasmine Farley, ‘The Motivator’ sets a new challenge each month – and for the month of December, participants are raising money for local charity Fair Frome by running or walking 325km over 25 days. And the pair are already encouraging people to sign up for their January challenge.
“These challenges are about encouraging people to stay active,” explains Ryan and Jasmine. “Each month we will be setting new challenges for people to join in with.”
The Motivator’s first challenge in October raised £250, helping towards the cost of repairing the roof at Trainstation Gym where Ryan teaches children’s boxing classes.
And for the December challenge, Ryan and Jasmine are hoping to raise even more for Fair Frome – especially as the challenge has gone global.
“What started off as a local challenge, now has people signed up from as far as Australia and Israel,” said the couple.
About their January challenge, Ryan and Jasmine said, “We will have three options. A gold, silver and bronze. The difference between this challenge and previous challenges is you can cover the distance by cycling and swimming, as well as running and walking.
“‘Gold’ will be starting with 1 mile on the 1st January, and adding 1 mile each day. Finally finishing on 31 miles on 31st January. This will amount to 496 miles for the whole month.
“‘Silver’ will be starting with 1 kilometre on the 1st January, and adding 1km each day. Finally finishing on 31km on 31st January. Again covering 496 km for the whole month.
“‘Bronze’ will be 1 mile every day of January amounting to 31 miles in total. The rules are simple enough. You can complete the target kilometres for the day in any combination within the 24 hour period, so for example on day 20 you can run 10km in the morning and 10km in the evening.
“To complete the challenge you must record all of your activity using one of the apps or smart watches, for example; Garmin, Strava, Apple Watch, Nike App.
“Anyone can join us in the next challenge, sign up fee is £15 and this gets you a finishers medal and access to our exclusive WhatsApp and Facebook group where we all support each other.”

![Town-wide programme brings month of social activities in May
A month-long programme of activities and events is set to take place across the town in May as part of an initiative encouraging residents to connect with themselves, each other and local places.
The scheme, Frome Connects, will run throughout the month and includes a mix of social activities, creative events and informal meet-ups in community spaces.
Highlights include the return of Dress Up Fridays, which began during lockdown and invites people to wear formal clothing or fancy dress and turn the town into their catwalk each Friday.
Set-piece moments include a Kate Bush-themed flashmob (Running Up That [Catherine] Hill) on 30th May, followed by a bell peal at St John’s Church where the bells will play Running Up That Hill.
There will also be a whole-town drone photo on Friday 30th May, with everyone encouraged to ‘look up’ at around 12.30pm.
