WINDS peaked at nearly 70mph in Frome during Storm Eunice on Friday 18th February, according to local meteorologist, Michael Cooper.
He reports, “The maximum wind gust I recorded on three anemometers was 68mph at 11.27am. However, on 30th January 1990, the day of the Burn’s Day Storm I recorded 90mph!
“In 1588, 1589, and especially 1703 , the wind was estimated to have been over 120mph in Somerset . Villages and hamlets were just blown away, and hundreds of people lost their lives. This was recorded by Daniel Defoe in his book , ‘The Storm.”
