THIS October sees National Hate Crime Awareness Week running from 8th to 15th. The week aims to raise awareness and to stand in solidarity with those affected by hate crime.
To coincide with the week’s activity, Stand Against Racism & Inequality (SARI) for Somerset will be hosting a ‘Hate Crime Empowerment Session’. The gathering will take place on Monday 10th October from 2pm to 4pm in the upstairs meeting room at Frome Library. It’s free to come along, and attendees are welcome to drop in at any time across the session.
SARI is a Bristol–based charity that supports victims of hate crime across Avon and Somerset. They provide signposting, training and educational workshops as well as a 24/7 emergency phone service.
Organisers say, “Sadly, hate crime is an increasing and serious issue in the UK including Somerset and it’s important to raise awareness of the ways in which we as individuals and a community can help provide support. The free session will cover the different types of hate crime, how to recognise and report hate crime and hate incidents, and how to support someone who has been a victim of hate crime by using best practice.
“From attending this session SARI aim to raise awareness, build confidence and empower individuals and the community in Frome to deal with hate crime appropriately, while developing a wider network of ally-ship. There’s no need to book on to the free event, just pop along to the library on Justice Lane on Monday 10th October between 2pm to 4pm.”
SARI’s work is funded by National Lottery Community Fund. This event is supported by Frome Town Council and the ARC Project, which is a collective of parents, friends, neighbours, educators and community organisers in Frome. They support the inclusive antiracist education of every child and all communities, through libraries and other resources, events, training and conversations.

![Town-wide programme brings month of social activities in May
A month-long programme of activities and events is set to take place across the town in May as part of an initiative encouraging residents to connect with themselves, each other and local places.
The scheme, Frome Connects, will run throughout the month and includes a mix of social activities, creative events and informal meet-ups in community spaces.
Highlights include the return of Dress Up Fridays, which began during lockdown and invites people to wear formal clothing or fancy dress and turn the town into their catwalk each Friday.
Set-piece moments include a Kate Bush-themed flashmob (Running Up That [Catherine] Hill) on 30th May, followed by a bell peal at St John’s Church where the bells will play Running Up That Hill.
There will also be a whole-town drone photo on Friday 30th May, with everyone encouraged to ‘look up’ at around 12.30pm.
