Redditch United 1 – 0 Frome Town – Calor Southern Premier League, Mon. 25th Nov.

On a cold Monday November night in the West Midlands, this match produced few highlights and Frome Town eventually lost 1-0 to a first half Redditch goal.

With Tim Stephenson arriving late at the ground, captain Bryan Smith moved into the heart of defence, which made a change from the previous Saturday when he started the match at centre forward in place of injured top scorer Ben Wood, who was again absent with injury and leaves the club with few options in the forward line. The match started with Frome having the first scoring opportunity in the 2nd minute as Aaron  Ledgister whipped in a great freekick allowing Rhys Baggridge to head towards goal and bring a save from Sam Hornby.

Redditch had their first chance in the 11th minute as Ashley Sammonds  drifted a  freekick towards the edge of the Frome area, allowing Harvey Headley to turn and shoot, but the effort went well wide of the post. With the pitch leaving a little to be desired, both teams were struggling to control the ball at times, but then Frome put things together in the 15th minute as Matt Smith produced a lovely through ball to Brandon Mundy who beat two defenders only to see his shot gathered at the second attempt by Hornby.

After Redditch’s  Sam Youngs had sent an effort inches wide from 20 yards out, Redditch took the lead in the 22nd minute as a free kick was not cleared and left back Joseph Ballinger poked the ball home from close range.

Frome were now struggling to put together any meaningful moves and the rest of the half revolved around the hosts looking to increase their lead, with Sammonds being denied by Darren Chitty after being set up by Headley, who himself had a header just wide a few minutes later. Edwin Ahenkorah hit the post with a shot after a mazy run and Chitty denied Headley with a low save just before half time.

Very little happened in the first 20 minutes of the second half, the first notable incident coming in the 68th minute as Sam Youngs chipped the ball just over the Frome bar, then Mark Cooper was felled just outside the Redditch area, but the free kick came to nothing.

Matt Smith probably came closest to breaking the deadlock for Frome as he hit a cross in the 79th minute that ended up heading towards the near post forcing Hornby to back pedal and tip the ball over the bar, but with chances few and far between it was Redditch who almost snatched a second right at the end, but Chitty was alert as ever to deny Sammonds.

So unfortunately Frome’s proud record of five successive away league victories couldn’t be extended to six.

Mark Cooper was awarded the “H&B Tyres Man of the Man Award”.

Frome Scorers: None. Redditch Scorers: Ballinger. Crowd: 112. Star Man: Mark Cooper. Entertainment Value: 2.

  • Female-led theatre company brings new comedy to Frome

A new comedy play about four women who decide to buy a house together is coming to Frome in July.

‘Your Move’ will be staged at Frome Town Hall from 3rd to 5th July during the Frome Festival by Really Truly Theatre Co.

In ‘Your Move’, four very different women decide to buy a house together. However, one of them is hiding something from the others, a secret that could bring the walls crashing down around them.

Writer Polly Lamb said, “I like to write about issues in society that affect everyone, while shining a spotlight on how they are experienced from a woman’s perspective. But the comedy element always creeps in because it wouldn’t be realistic if we weren’t falling about laughing at some point.”

  • Frome storage firm offers local charities a free container

A storage company with a yard in Frome is offering a local charity a free 20ft container for 12 months, along with a free van-and-man removal service to help move items into storage.

Giant Storage, a family-run business, says the offer is open to charities in Frome, where the company has recently expanded its site. The company also says the arrangement will be reviewed after a year, with the possibility of continuing it.

“Frome has a strong tradition of community-minded organisations, and we are keen to support that spirit,” said Henry Langdon who founded the company in Salisbury before expanding into Frome and Yeovil. “If your charity has a storage challenge - seasonal equipment, donated goods, archive materials for instance - this could be the answer.

Every week, a group of people who have been bereaved meet in an upstairs room at the Cheese and Grain for social connection.

The Widows and Widowers group meets every Wednesday, enabling people who have lost their partners to meet others with shared experiences.

Group leader Marilyn said, “It can be really difficult for people who have lost their partners. It gives them a chance to come out and do things alone.”

Marilyn, who was widowed 16 years ago, said, “There are people in my group who lost their husbands 20 years ago.”

  • Local man to drive emergency aid to Ukraine

A local volunteer is driving to Ukraine in July to deliver an emergency vehicle and medical supplies to the war-torn country.

Martyn Starnes, chief executive of Frome Town Football Club, will travel to the western side of the country with volunteers from Medical Life Lines Ukraine, covering 1,200 miles over three and a half days.

“The situation in Ukraine is very dangerous and very volatile, particularly near the front line,” said Martyn, who also completed the journey in 2024.

“They’re in constant need of emergency vehicles to take not only the military but civilians to hospital and there is a never-ending demand for these vehicles.

“When we arrive, we hand them over to the locals to be positioned wherever they need to go throughout the country.

  • Frome Park Men maintain their good form

The B team had a disappointing defeat away to Wells and left empty handed but are hoping to bounce back next time when they are at home against Purnells B.

  • Health information events at Frome Medical Practice

Two health information events are being held at Frome Medical Practice this month, aimed at supporting patients on key health topics.

The first event, a Pelvic Health Talk, is offered as part of the Women’s Health Hub at the practice and takes place on Tuesday 23rd June from 6pm to 7pm.

Organisers say, “Many women experience symptoms of poor pelvic health in silence but it doesn’t have to be that way. Patients are invited to come to the talk to learn more about common pelvic health issues, as well as ways to improve symptoms and support wellbeing. The session will be led by a pelvic health physiotherapist and aims to empower women to take control of their health.”
