The Merlin Theatre will this year be paying a visit to the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future as they present ‘A Christmas Carol’ for their 2014 Christmas Show, which runs from 4th to 13th December.

The players have been cast and rehearsals are underway for what promises to be a truly magical show this year, capturing the true essence of Christmas through the retelling of Charles Dickens’ classic novel.

This ghostly tale is brought to life in an exciting new musical adaptation by the award winning Merlin Theatre Company. Keeping true to the original text, it draws upon the themes of time, family and society’s ills in a tale to warm even the coldest of hearts.

When the spirit of Jacob Marley, his former partner, tells Scrooge he must face his responsibilities, Scrooge is taken on a very busy night to show him the error of his ways.

Bringing the atmosphere of Victorian Christmas traditions to the stage with a cavalcade of colourful Dickensian characters and a ghostly quartet of guardians, A Christmas Carol is the perfect way to get you and your family into the Christmas spirit.

Tickets are now on sale for the production which runs from Thursday 4th – Saturday 13th December.  For full listings of dates, times and prices visit www.merlintheatre.co.uk.

Over 80 talented artists and makers will display a wide-ranging array of work from sculpture, textile art and ceramics to printmaking, photography and carpentry.

“There’s something for everybody!” says committee member Chloe Pinheiro. “If you’ve never experienced an open studios trail before, it’s a wonderful way to discover the local creative community, chat to makers in their studios, quietly browse a group exhibition or learn a new art form in one of the many workshops on offer! • Community garden wins Frome in Bloom award

The new community garden on Milk Street has won the President’s Trophy in the 2025 Frome in Bloom awards for outstanding community effort.

The garden was renovated earlier this year by members of Trinity Community Group, Milk Street residents, pupils at Vallis School and residents of the Trinity area, working with Frome Town Council’s ranger team, Tree Officer Helen Viner and the Frome Town Council Communities team.

Flower beds, seating and wooden play structures have created a space for local residents to gather, for children to play in before and after school and improved the appearance of the whole area.

Wild About Trees Officer Helen Viner said, “Milk Street Green was such a lovely project to work on – the community came together and achieved something that will keep bringing joy and bringing people together for years to come. We’re really proud of it, and we’re so grateful to everyone who helped with the vision, the planting and now the ongoing maintenance of this brilliant space. Thank you, Frome in Bloom for recognising all of that hard work!”

  • Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra – with a modern twist

Shakespear’s tragedy Antony and Cleopatra is coming to the Merlin Theatre next month, brought to you – with a modern twist – by Shakespeare Live.

The story of the passionate love affair between two powerful rulers – Cleopatra , queen of Egypt, and Mark Antony, of Rome – is full of comedy and witty banter, yet it is also a history play wrapped round a tragic romance, examining the choices between the personal and the political.

This fast-paced version, adapted and directed by Jacky Crosher for Shakespeare Live, spins a new twist on this less-performed play. An ensemble cast unpick the plot and text using both modern and original language.

“A glorious, magical re-working of this wonderful play,” say the organisers.

The play is at Frome’s Merlin Theatre on Saturday 25th October at 8pm. For more details and tickets, visit merlintheatre.co.uk
