It’s all change at Frome Cricket Club ahead of 2016, as the club embarks on an exciting new chapter, following the appointment of three former Somerset stars into key roles.
Robin Lett joins as Head Coach, whilst Mark Harman chairs the club’s Cricket Committee and Colin Dredge takes on the role of Club President.
The first of these changes follows the sad passing of Club President Graham Barnes in 2015 after years of dedicated service.
Following December’s postponed AGM, the club is pleased to announce Colin Dredge will take on the role as Club President. Having come through the youth ranks at Frome, Colin enjoyed a long, successful career representing Somerset Cricket Club before returning to the club to finish his playing days at Frome. Colin and his family have a long, proud association with Frome Cricket and the club are delighted that Colin will take up the role as President.
On the playing side the club has undergone a restructure with the establishment of a dedicated Cricket Committee to oversee all playing matters. Chaired by former Frome and Somerset off-spinner Mark Harman, the committee aims to provide a sustainable structure which combines cricket at the highest level with a solid foundation for youngsters to enjoy their cricket and progress. The committee has already made good progress in its early weeks, and has exciting plans for 2016.
Frome are also delighted to announce the appointment of Robin Lett as the club’s new Head Coach. Robin will be responsible for all junior and senior coaching at the club, and takes up his role from January to coordinate the club’s preseason. Robin is a Level Three ECB qualified coach with a wealth of experience through playing and coaching at the highest level, having represented Somerset CC and latterly Bath.
Frome also have two new captains during 2016. At January’s AGM Mark Sanger was elected First Team Captain whilst Joe Quinn will take on the captaincy of the Second XI. The Sunday development XI will be captained and run by Robin Lett, and will play in the newly-formed Three Counties Cricket League, which will offer all players high-quality cricket with the aim of progressing young players into high-level senior cricket.
Preseason preparations get underway for the players from Sunday 7th February. Training will take place at Writhlington School from 6.00 – 7.30pm running weekly until early April, where the players will be put through their paces by Robin. New players – as well as current and past ones – are welcome!
Junior Nets will also take place over the winter at Frome Leisure Centre for youngsters aged nine-15. Sessions will run on Friday nights from 6.00 to 7.00pm from Friday 22nd January, led by the club’s team of qualified coaches including Robin and Mark Harman.
If your child is interested in joining the club or simply attending some net sessions to learn more about the game all new players are welcome. Simply turn up on the night!
Finally 2016 will see the club enter an Under 19 side into the national T20 competition. With coloured clothing personalised with names and numbers, midweek fixtures in front of a packed clubhouse, music, barbecues and plenty of fours and sixes it’s sure to be a huge hit this summer.
