LOCAL artist, Philip Needham, is this month hosting his first UK exhibition at the Black Swan Art’s Round Tower gallery.
Philip’s exhibition titled ‘On Form and Colour’ is on display from Wednesday 26th February until Monday 9th March.
About his work, Philip says, “I am self-taught and work almost exclusively in oil colours, on a variety of substrates, canvas, wood, glass and constructed surfaces. I do not maintain a single style but work to themes that arise, often returning to a specific idea on more than one occasion.
“Form and colour are principle concepts in my largely abstract works, inspired by the surrounding environment, geomorphology and the physical concepts of subatomic particles and cosmology (and the electromagnetic waves that “illuminate” them).
“I tend to avoid the rectangular form and the frame and construct ‘canvases’ of a variety of materials in unusual and uneven shapes, often incorporating spaces that allows the background wall to be seen. These works are frequently in three dimensions, incorporating my interest in the boundary between painting and sculpture.”
