A FROME man, who now lives with his family in Cape Town, has published a book ‘Blossom in Winter’ about his childhood and growing up in Somerset during the war.
David Alder, who was born and lived most of his life in Frome, now living in Cape Town, South Africa with his family, has written his memories from childhood into a book, “Blossom in Winter” so that they could never be lost.
The book is an insight into a youth’s life during the war in Somerset and his hopes and aspirations for the future.
In writing the book David relived some of his fondest memories of living in Frome saying, “My memories of my days in Frome are still so vivid, it was as though I was walking down Cheap Street once more. It was not a difficult process because I was totally reliving the time being written about.
“I haven’t been back to Frome for 15 years but I would like to return soon to see again the picture of my early life. My memories are full of the River Frome from Feltham to Blatchbridge, from Tytherington to Marston, where I spent most of my youth. Cape Town is so totally different, fine at my time of life, but you can’t beat the English villages and countryside!”
David has spent his life being a storyteller and encouraged by his family to write his memories down, he finally published his first book, which incorporates both stories and poems. “I’ve never really thought about being a published author’ David continued. “But being an avid reader myself, I guess I would like the idea of being widely read.”
