Liam Harkness, blind runner from Frome and Zdenek Gregor, Somerset Sight trustee are running The Frome Half Marathon for Somerset Sight.
Liam said, “I have been helped by so many great organisations since I have lost my sight, it is great for me to be able to try and give a little bit back to a fantastic local charity which does so much amazing work for visually impaired people.”
Zdenek will be guiding Liam through the race acting as his guide. Zdenek said, “I support Somerset Sight as it follows its mission to the letter. It helps people with reduced vision to regain and maintain their independence.
“In hospital eye clinics, Somerset Sight volunteers help newly diagnosed patients to understand and cope with their reduced vision. Social and adventure activities are laid on for the younger service users and Somerset Sight volunteer home visitors help to reduce the loneliness which can affect older people. All this is being achieved in a low key and no fuss fashion and is appreciated by our service users.
“I get much satisfaction from helping people with reduced vision to achieve their new goals, being involved in fundraising for the charity and in the planning of new activity centres throughout our county, as a home visitor and a trustee, as well as doing marathons as a guide for my blind running buddy.”

Somerset Sight is a not for profit organisation providing practical and emotional support to over 3000 people and their families across the county who are blind or visually impaired.
Holly Sutton Somerset Sight’s development officer said, “Running a half marathon is a huge achievement. It would be a challenge to someone who could see well. We are very grateful to Liam and Zdenek for raising money to support sight impaired people in the county. Somerset Sight is hugely reliant on fundraising, donations and legacies. Without the generosity of our supporters we simply would not be able to continue providing our vital services.”
