Cake picnic raises funds for school breakfast scheme

A community cake picnic has raised more than £400 to support a new breakfast club helping families at Vallis First School.

The fundraising event, held on 1st August at Holy Trinity Church Hall, was organised by Holy Trinity Church and nearby hairdressing salon Hair of Thrones.

The money raised will support Breakfast at the Bridge, an initiative launched by Holy Trinity Church on 1st June at The Bridge Café on Selwood Road. The project was created to help families from the Vallis First School community after the school was unable to join the government breakfast club scheme.

A pilot scheme was initially funded through a private donation, alongside contributions from Frome Town Rotary, the Rotary Club and the Lions Club. However, with the breakfast club continuing through the summer holidays at the request of families, further funding is now needed to keep it running.

The idea for the cake picnic came from Gabriela at Hair of Thrones to draw the community together in a fundraising effort. Those attending were invited to bring a cake to share. Boxes were also available to purchase so people could take slices of different cakes home.

The spread included an array of homemade cakes, cupcakes, bakery cakes, cheesecake and a Liquorice Allsorts cake.

Children enjoyed a tombola and guessing how many sweets were in a large jar, while two baskets of hair care products were raffled.

Organisers said, “The event was a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together over tea, coffee and cake. Holy Trinity and Hair of Thrones would like to thank all those who donated and participated.”
