WILTSHIRE Young Musicians is starting an exciting new singing group for young singers on Monday afternoons in Warminster.
Starting on Monday 17th April, Warminster Young Singers is for young people aged 7 to 17 singing a wide range of music including musical theatre, film, jazz, modern choral music and pop. New singers are invited to go along and try out a session.
It follows the success of the organisation’s West Wiltshire Young Singers at the Mid-Somerset Festival, winning two trophies in the Sacred and Secular under 16’s category and the under 16’s Free Choice category.
The new singing group’s rehearsals will take place in Warminster Civic Centre on Mondays at 4pm. Kirsten Mulcahy, who is currently head of creative arts at Wiltshire Rural Music, will be leading the vocal group.
The Wiltshire Young Musicians, born out of the now ceased Wiltshire Music Service, have been based at Bradford on Avon’s Wiltshire Music Centre since 1990, with many of their flagship ensembles rehearsing in the centre itself. Despite junior groups being available in strings and wind instruments in other parts of the county, such as Devizes, Chippenham and Royal Wootton Bassett, Warminster has never been graced with the organisation’s presence.
Now, under the leadership of newly appointed executive director, Chris Turner, the organisation is in a transition phase which includes growing into more Wiltshire towns and bringing new opportunities to the young people of Wiltshire, particularly those who have never had the chance to experience being part of an ensemble before.
Alongside the new choir in Warminster, the organisation is opening new pick up and play groups at the Wiltshire Music Centre, which allow young people to play an instrument for the first time ever with no previous musical experience needed, even the instrument is provided free of charge by the Wiltshire Young Musicians.
Chris Turner said, “We are so excited to move into Warminster with a permanent group for the first time ever – it is long overdue. We hope schools will be ready to build strong relationships with us and can’t wait to offer high quality performance opportunities to local young singers.”
