FROME local, Luke Maunder, is well into an epic charity challenge – running 48 half-marathons in 48 counties in 48 days.
He’s hoping to be the first person ever to complete the unique challenge and will be raising money to help support his cousin, 16-year old Josie Chalk, who lives with a rare life-limiting genetic condition called Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome.
The initial fundraising target, to help pay for equipment for Josie, was originally set at £10,000 – however the day before he started the challenge in March, Luke was “amazed” to smash his target.
“Josie’s family and I decided to continue raising money,” said Luke speaking to Frome Times. “Any money raised over the £10,000 will go towards a trust fund for Josie for any future equipment or aids that she might need.
“A lot of the local community have come together to support us, it’s been brilliant.”
Josie’s parents, Della and James Chalk, added, “We are so grateful for everyone’s help towards Josie’s equipment.”
Luke’s marathon challenge – which is taking him to all 48 counties in England – was inspired by a similar ultramarathon challenge in America, which covers 50 states in 50 days. “I thought it would be cool to do an English spin on that challenge,” said Luke. “And as far as I can see, no one has done the same with the counties in England – as far as I am aware I’m the first person to attempt this.”
Luke is expected to complete his challenge on 12th May, running a total of 628.8 miles.
“It’s going well,” said Luke on day 21 of his challenge. “Body and fatigue wise, I thought it would get perpetually harder, but it seems my mind, body and soul are in sync some what and the difficulty has levelled out – which is good. Although it is still difficult every day, it has been a great experience!”
