Carnival to bring ‘record-breaking’ procession to town

The streets will come alive with Frome’s biggest-ever carnival this weekend, with organisers saying entry numbers are the highest in the event’s history.

The Frome Carnival procession will leave Marston Trading Estate at 7pm on Saturday 26th September, featuring illuminated floats, groups, charities and individuals in fancy dress, with music, glitz and glitter.

The carnival was at risk of cancellation earlier this year due to a shortage of volunteers and fundraising challenges. However, organisers say this year’s entry numbers have reached a record high.

This year also marks 40 years since the first Wessex GP Carnival Circuit, with Frome hosting the first procession. Leading this year’s procession will be Cary Comedians, who were the overall winners of the first Frome Carnival on the circuit 40 years ago.

There will also be a tribute to ‘Carnival dad’ Keith Berry, who died earlier this year. The procession will briefly pause in the Market Place in his memory.

Organiser Mandy Morgan said, “Keith was the heartbeat and wise counsel of Frome Carnival for so many years, offering warmth, dedication and a steady hand whenever it was needed. His passing leaves a massive void in our carnival family but his legacy, spirit and love for this tradition will be present in every single light and cheer along the route this year. We dedicate the success of this carnival to his memory.”

Unlike previous years, there will be no daytime children’s carnival this year, although the committee hopes it can return in 2027.

Mandy said, “Parades and carnivals have been held in Frome on and off for over 500 years. Next year we will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of Frome Carnival in its present form.

“Please help us make this carnival extra special by giving all you can afford. You can donate by popping any loose change into the collecting buckets. There will also be card readers available, so please look out for collectors with these. You can also donate by scanning the QR code. Here’s to keeping the tradition alive together.”

  • MPs demand answers over RUH home care transfer

Plans to transfer a home care medical service run by the Royal United Hospital in Bath (RUH) to a private provider have drawn criticism from local MPs demanding transparency. Frome MP Anna Sabine and fellow Liberal Democrat MPs Wera Hobhouse, Roz Savage, Brian Mathew and Sarah Gibson have written to the RUH regarding the transfer of the Hospital at Home service to HCRG Care Group. The decision follows concerns from staff that the change could disrupt an established and successful operation.

  • Wild About Frome: Time to get seedy!

Hello, it’s Kerry here from the Frome Seed Library.
Your free, permanent seed swap located inside our fantastic town library. We’ve now reached one of the most exciting times of the year for us seedy folk...seed harvesting time!
But why bother saving seed when you could just grab a cheap packet of seeds from the supermarket next spring?
Well, you see each and every seed, from the mighty 25kg coco de mer to the fine dust of the foxglove, is a perfectly evolved vessel of genetics, which given the right conditions will germinate and (hopefully) flourish.
Whilst there is nothing wrong with buying your seeds, the vast majority of the seeds sold in the UK (around 80%) are overwhelmingly imported from overseas, where seeds have been grown in carefully controlled environments. This means your seed has no genetic memory of that soggy summer of 2024, your claggy clay soil, or the recent drought, whereas your plants at home will and for those that have continued to thrive despite everything, well that degree of hyper-local resilience and adaptability is something no seed company can replicate.
As politicians warn of future food shortages, it is crucial to recognise the role of seed in increasing our local food resilience; they are our insurance policy but the type of seed and provenance is key.

  • Residents call for action over school traffic scheme

Concerns have been raised by residents living near a Frome school over the enforcement of a traffic scheme, with reports of congestion, speeding, blocked driveways and verbal abuse. People living near Oakfield Academy are calling for greater enforcement of the Safer School Streets scheme, which they say is failing to prevent traffic problems during school drop-off and pick-up times. The scheme was made permanent last September following an 18-month trial.
