Children spread kindness at Frome school

Pupils in Frome were tasked with spreading kindness at their school as part of an initiative with The Good Heart and Frome Kindness Festival.

Following the success of the six-week pilot programme, the ‘Order of the Kind Heart’ could be offered to other primary schools across the area. The programme saw children in Years 2 and 3 at Vallis First School undertake missions designed to spread kindness in school and beyond.

The children learnt to notice opportunities for kindness wherever they went. They surprised friends with handmade worry worms tucked into book bags, presented flowers to the school’s cleaners and office staff to thank them for the often-unseen ways they care for others, and painted kindness rocks to leave in the community.

They also explored empathy through the programme’s ‘Cloaks of Empathy’ and extended their acts of kindness into their home life.

Project lead Martha Oster said, “Using stories, games and a little imagination, the programme encourages children to see kindness not simply as ‘being nice’, but as noticing others, showing courage and choosing compassion in everyday life. It reflects Vallis First School’s values and demonstrates the school’s commitment to working creatively with local organisations to enrich children’s learning and strengthen community connections.”
