Frome College’s Radio Club hosted a 24-hour live takeover of the community radio station, Fromefm last month. Students have also completed their Fromefm broadcast code & OFCOM awareness course.
The students’ 24-hour takeover of Fromefm raised £1,885 for their project to help provide mental health counselling for students.
During the takeover, a host of live shows continued until the Sunday, with special guests Paul Ross and Tony Christie; interactive maths, science and English lessons; a play, and plenty of music. The shows gained messages of support from all over the UK as well as Houston, Montego Bay, the Gold Coast, and Melbourne.
Frome College said, “We would like to thank everyone who has supported this project and our fantastic young people. If you would like more information on how you can help, please visit the Fromefm website at www.Frome.Fm/24 Podcasts of the shows are also available on the website.
The college’s radio club students also received their certificates for the Fromefm broadcast awareness course from Fromefm’s training director, Rupert Kirkham, and Frome College principal, Ms Reynolds on 2nd May. The students all passed with over 90% scores. This now means they can help with studio management, and briefing their radio show guests on the responsibilities that govern community radio.
The student-led Radio Club make features about life at Frome College, as well as wider local, national and global issues that matter to them. It enables young people of all abilities to work with, and get to know people within the wider community. This in turn, allows them to have a say in services that affect them, and to develop the confidence and expertise to articulate what is important to them, providing vital skills and experience that will last a lifetime.
