AN allotment group for anyone with dementia and their carers is holding an open day this month, to celebrate Dementia Action Week.
Organised by Frome Wild Memories Project, the day will take place on Tuesday 14th May at 11-1pm and Wednesday 15th May at 2-4pm, at Welshmill Allotments in Frome.
“With spring well underway, it’s a wonderful time of year to enjoy nature and maybe even get stuck into some gardening,” says one of the organisers of the project, Zak Mathergratton.
“Frome Wild Memories Project is a fun and easy-going weekly group for anyone living with dementia and their families. We meet regularly at our own allotment plot at Welshmill with a programme including arts and crafts, gardening, nature conservation, tea and biscuits.
“We aim to make getting outside accessible to everyone; sessions are free and we can help with transport. One of our longstanding participants put it like this: ‘We take an individual approach to things. Being allowed to be ourselves is something the group does for us, with no judgement; if I can do it or I can’t do it, it doesn’t matter. That’s the essence of what it’s about’.”
