Family complete London-Brighton Bike Ride for son who survived against the odds

A FROME family have pedalled from London to Brighton to raise money for lifesaving research by British Heart Foundation (BHF), to give back to the science that helped save their son’s life.

Kayleigh Starkey-Savage and her family took on the BHF London to Brighton Bike Ride to honour their son Felix, who they were told might not survive. Felix, now four, was diagnosed with a rare combination of multiple heart defects while still in the womb.

Kayleigh recalls, “When we were having the scan, medics told us his heart didn’t look right and they had some concerns. It was absolutely devastating.

“When I saw a picture of Felix’s heart, I could see it wasn’t normal, there were bits missing. I remember thinking I don’t know how a child could survive with a heart like that.”

Kayleigh and her husband Gary also found out Felix had pulmonary atresia, a hole in his heart and aortic stenosis at his 21-week scan. It meant his heart wasn’t fully developed, preventing normal blood flow. He also had a dysplastic left kidney. They were then given the heartbreaking decision to either continue with the pregnancy or terminate.

The couple were given a glimmer of hope when further scans revealed that Felix’s arterial branches had started to develop. The cardiac teams started talking about what could be done and Kayleigh and Gary started to dream of taking their baby home.

Felix was born in May 2019 under supervision at St Michael’s Hospital. A day later he was transferred to the children’s hospital in Bristol where Kayleigh and Gary were told to prepare for the worst – news they had not expected.

The next few days were a waiting game but, when Felix was 10 days old, surgeons decided to insert a shunt into his pulmonary artery to help it function properly. This would give him a chance to grow stronger ahead of further surgery at a later date.

Kayleigh said, “We always say our hearts had to break for his to be repaired. It went against all natural instincts as a mother to hand Felix over, but surgery was his only chance of survival.”

He spent the next few days recovering until finally at 23 days old, he was able to go home for the first time.

In March 2020 Felix needed a second surgery to replace his shunt and patch the hole in his heart. While he has continued to thrive, reaching his fourth birthday in May, he is due to have further heart surgery later in life.

Kayleigh said, “Felix is such a superstar and loves being a big brother to Sybil, who is now 18-months.. When we first learnt that Felix had his heart condition, our idea for what life would be like as a new family was completely shattered. But so much of that image we had has been restored thanks to the lengths the team around Felix have gone to, to give him the best chance at life.”

Kayleigh and Gary, together with her sister, joined 10,000 riders on 18th June who took on the famous BHF London to Brighton Bike Ride. Cyclists of all abilities took on the challenging 54-mile cycle from Clapham Common to the Brighton seafront, all with the same mission to fund lifesaving research.

The BHF’s flagship event has now been running for almost half a century and this year it’s on its way to raising £2 million for the charity’s research into new treatments and cures for heart and circulatory diseases.

Kayleigh said, “I find it amazing that they were able to operate on a heart the size of my thumb nail. Our consultant said that when he started his career, the surgery he performed on Felix wasn’t even possible. It really puts into perspective how important this research is and how far things have come in such a short time.”

The BHF say, “Heart defects are diagnosed in at least one in 150 births, that’s an average of 13 babies each day in the UK, with more diagnoses later in life. Before the BHF existed, the majority of babies diagnosed with a severe heart defect in the UK did not survive to their first birthday but today, thanks to research, more than eight out of 10 survive to adulthood.”

Senior events manager at the BHF, Roisin Greenup said, “It’s fantastic to see Kayleigh and her family’s passion and determination in helping us fund lifesaving research.

“Without the dedication of our cyclists and the commitment of fundraisers like them, we wouldn’t be able to fund research that has already broken new ground, revolutionised treatments and transformed the lives of millions of people in the UK.”

  • Community garden wins Frome in Bloom award

The new community garden on Milk Street has won the President’s Trophy in the 2025 Frome in Bloom awards for outstanding community effort.

The garden was renovated earlier this year by members of Trinity Community Group, Milk Street residents, pupils at Vallis School and residents of the Trinity area, working with Frome Town Council’s ranger team, Tree Officer Helen Viner and the Frome Town Council Communities team.

Flower beds, seating and wooden play structures have created a space for local residents to gather, for children to play in before and after school and improved the appearance of the whole area.

Wild About Trees Officer Helen Viner said, “Milk Street Green was such a lovely project to work on – the community came together and achieved something that will keep bringing joy and bringing people together for years to come. We’re really proud of it, and we’re so grateful to everyone who helped with the vision, the planting and now the ongoing maintenance of this brilliant space. Thank you, Frome in Bloom for recognising all of that hard work!”

  • Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra – with a modern twist

Shakespear’s tragedy Antony and Cleopatra is coming to the Merlin Theatre next month, brought to you – with a modern twist – by Shakespeare Live.

The story of the passionate love affair between two powerful rulers – Cleopatra , queen of Egypt, and Mark Antony, of Rome – is full of comedy and witty banter, yet it is also a history play wrapped round a tragic romance, examining the choices between the personal and the political.

This fast-paced version, adapted and directed by Jacky Crosher for Shakespeare Live, spins a new twist on this less-performed play. An ensemble cast unpick the plot and text using both modern and original language.

“A glorious, magical re-working of this wonderful play,” say the organisers.

The play is at Frome’s Merlin Theatre on Saturday 25th October at 8pm. For more details and tickets, visit merlintheatre.co.uk

  • Frome Birth Talk takes over Tiny Hearts Project

Frome Birth Talk has taken over the running of the Tiny Hearts Project, based at the town’s community space, The Good Heart.

Tiny Hearts hosts well-established free drop-in groups for ages 0 to five and their carers on Mondays and Thursdays. It also runs Tiny Rainbow Hearts, a group for LGBTQIA+ families to socialise with other parents and their children.

The announcement was made during a visit from the High Sherif of Somerset, Janet Montgomery, and Deputy Lieutenant of Somerset, Lucy Nelson, who joined a Tiny Hearts session on Thursday 14th August, to see the impact both The Good Heart and Frome Birth Talk are having in the area.

Thanks to a National Lottery grant of £20,000, Frome Birth Talk has been able to take on the administrative and financial needs for this well-loved group and enable its continuation for the community for at least the next two years. It is facilitated by Vicki Ross, who has joined Frome Birth Talk as Volunteer and Groups Coordinator and will provide much-needed continuity for the group and its regular attendees.

  • Somerset Council may ‘look long and hard’ at further cuts without government support

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

Somerset Council may have to “look long and hard” at making further cuts to local services if further central government support cannot be provided.

In order to set a balanced budget for the last two years, the council has been reliant on “exceptional financial support” from central government in the form of a capitalisation directive.

This directive allows the council to fund day-to-day spending from the sale of land, property and other assets – something which is not normally permitted.

The council is currently forecasting an overspend of just over £5.4m for the current financial year, with many of the proceeds of recent asset sales being funnelled into the next phase of its transformation programme.

  • An evening in tribute to Johnnie Walker

Frome favourites Winstone’s Hunting Raven Books and Raves from the Graves have teamed up to host an evening with Tiggy Walker, the beloved wife of the late Johnnie Walker.

The event coincides with the release of Tiggy Walker’s memoir, Both Sides Now, in which she shares the joys of their life together: from the soaring highs of Johnnie’s legendary Radio 2 days to navigating the frustration and strange intimacy of anticipatory grief.

Manager of Hunting Raven, Tina, said, “Fans of Johnnie Walker will delight in getting to know the man better. But this event is not just for those who loved him — it is for anyone who’s known the tangled, messy grace of caring, grieving and loving all the way to the final breath.”

Tiggy will be in conversation with Graham Jones of Clocktower Record Shop and will be taking questions from the audience.

The event will take place at The Assembly Rooms on Friday 3rd October at 7.30pm.
