Fate of Selwood Garden Community plans to be decided as public inquiry closes

The public inquiry into the Selwood Garden Community plans has come to a close this week with a decision expected to be issued within six months.

The inquiry began on 5th August with a four-day hearing in Shepton Mallett; it concluded with a site visit on 12th August. Following the meeting, the Inspector will now prepare a report for the Secretary of State, who will issue the decision within six months.

During the inquiry, the plans were discussed in depth, with members of the community voicing their concerns about the proposed development. They cited the loss of green space and a lack of infrastructure and services in Frome to support the scheme.

The development proposes 1,700 houses, two care homes, 6.7 hectares of employment land, a mixed-use local centre, a primary school and open spaces. It would be built on greenfield land on the edge of Frome, near Marston Lane and the A361.

Although Somerset councillors were ‘minded to refuse’ the application last year, the inquiry is taking place because the government decided to ‘call in’ the plans for a decision at national level, where the final outcome will be made.

Following the hearing, the Stop Selwood Garden Community Group said, “Although it is still early to draw conclusions, we are grateful that so many members of the public and other interested parties took the time to make compelling and well-researched representations of their views. We feel that good points have been made so far regarding the potential traffic disruption this development is likely to cause.”

Ahead of the inquiry, residents and local MP Anna Sabine had shared frustration over the hearing being held in Shepton Mallett, 12 miles away from Frome, with residents saying they felt ‘locked out of the process they should be central to.’

  • All about Bath at next society lecture

The next lecture by the Frome Society will focus on Bath as a World Heritage Site, recognised as one of the ‘Great Spa Towns of Europe.’

The talk will be held on Saturday 29th November, delivered by Paul Simons in the Assembly Rooms, at the rear of the Frome Memorial Theatre.

Organisers say, “In July 2021, UNESCO selected Bath, along with eleven other towns, to form a new multi-site inscription of the Great Spa Towns of Europe, but it took ten years of research and documentation to get there. In 2011, Paul was appointed Secretary General of the UNESCO project for the Great Spa Towns of Europe and during the following ten years steered the project to achievement."

  • Share Shop explores fresh ideas to reopen

The Share Shop team are exploring ways of re-opening in the town, following its closure last year.

Share Shop Trustee Cllr Anne Hills said at Frome’s full town council meeting last month that the team are exploring ways which the service could ‘come out of hibernation.’ The shop enables residents to borrow some of the 800 items available, including arts and crafts, DIY and decorating, tools, household items, leisure and camping equipment, kitchen items and games and more.

“We have got lots of irons in the fire,” said Cllr Anne Hills. “One of the possible ways of us coming out of a hibernation is to have a distributed service around the town, so different categories of items in different locations so that we start back in a small way, in a controlled way.”

  • Storytelling at Frome pub

A local trio of traditional story lovers are calling in tellers and listeners for a gathering this month.

Frome Storytelling Circle is a home for myth, wonder and the listening of traditional oral stories and folk tales. They will be hosting a storytelling event upstairs at The Three Swans pub on King Street on Thursday 27th November.

Organisers, Lara, Jed and Steph are inviting residents to bring a story to tell or just come and listen in a relaxed and welcoming space.

Lara said, “My childhood love of tales of fantasy, myth and jokes drew me towards exploring the power and shared pleasure of stories. I have used storytelling in my work with adults with learning disabilities and with young people with communication difficulties and enjoy sharing stories in a community setting. I’ve also had the pleasure of training with traditional storyteller Shonaleigh Cumbers.”
