A NEW sports project, ‘Fight like a girl’ begins in Frome this week. Aimed at young women under 25 the sessions are free and are being delivered by Elevation Martial Arts.
Chris Roach from Elevation Martial Arts said,” I am delighted that we have the opportunity to offer these free sessions. They are aimed at getting young women to have a go at sports that they maybe haven’t tried before. The sessions will include boxing, martial arts, kick boxing and self-defence and are aimed at newcomers to the sports.
Sue Willis, director of Purple Elephant, organiser of the sessions said, “There are many excellent role models in sport for young women such as Olympic athletes Jessica Ennis-Hill and Nicola Adams, but there is a big drop off in women participating in sports post-14. The fighting sports are so good for strength and any increase in activity is good for confidence. We hope that these sessions will encourage young women to think of themselves as strong and capable and that they will have a lot of fun, as well as increasing their levels of activity.”
Sessions will be on Tuesdays at 4pm at the Cheese and Grain, and Sundays at 5pm at Liberty Gymnastics, starting on Tuesday 10th October and are running until December. The project is for people who are not interested in traditional sports but who would like the chance to try something new.
