FORMER England rugby star Will Green joined in a 650-kilometre static cycle ride held at The White Hart, Trudoxhill to raise money for Children in Need.
The event was called ‘From Scrumpy to Buckfast’ and saw Will Green and a host of local dignitaries such as the Mayor, cllr Dickon Moore, and local MP David Heath join in the bike ride. The aim of the cycle ride was to go the distance from The White Hart, near Frome to Glasgow, using two static bikes and combining the distance covered.
The aim was to tackle the challenge in one day and David Heath MP officially opened the event at 8.30am. Frome’s Mayor, cllr Dickon Moore and local Reverend Anthony Dickson both cycled half an hour for the cause, both covering just over 12.5 kilometres. The target was reached at 9.50pm.
In total, £1,550 was raised from the event with a raffle also taking place. Graeme Barry from The White Hart said, “It was a fantastic community event with over 50 cyclists doing a half-hour ride. Will Green, ex-England rugby player, came in and cycled an hour, with local tri-athlete Mark Poole racking up 49.81km in the hour. Mark Poole took the day off work to ensure we hit our target and cycled an impressive five times, so a big thanks to Mark!
“Local fitness trainer Paul Ryman also popped in and was determined to beat Mark’s fastest time of the day of 16.49 km in half an hour and did so, hitting an impressive 17.15km.
“Local companies donated many prizes for the raffle so a big thanks to Event Horizon, The Acoustic Café, Paul Ryman Fitness, The Bodhi Tree, The Wiltshire Smoke House and many more who donated. This all helped us to raise an impressive £1,550 altogether. The Train Station Gym need a huge thank you for loaning us the bikes making the event possible and to Nicole Coia and Sharon Gait for doing all the main event planning for this great event.
“We are already planning for next year’s event which we are going to make tougher and hopefully smash this year’s target.”
