Periodontal disease is the effect bacteria has on the gingival tissue surrounding the teeth, and the mucous membrane. It is an irreversible problem and can result in pain and tooth loss. Periodontal disease effects 80% of dogs and cats over 3 years old. Some of the symptoms are; salivating, drooling, pawing at the mouth, halitosis (smelly breath), lethargy, reduced appetite, unusual aggression or growling at food. Some pets will not show any signs of periodontal disease, but will still be in need of treatment.
Other than obvious dental pain your pet may have; bad breath, difficulty eating, stopped regularly grooming themselves, or become generally irritable or unhappy.
