Frome-based artist, Hans Borgonjon, is one of 200 artists who were selected for the NordArt 2018 in Germany, showing his work ’40 Concave Portraits.’
NordArt is one of the largest and most renowned international exhibitions open to individual artists. 3,500 artists applied from all over the world; China, South-Korea, India, Russia, Europe and South and North America.
Hans’ installation was made and shown first in 2012 in Frome in the SilkMill. They are portraits made with casts of local Fromians, with the plaster casts forming the basis for the making of the porcelain concave portrait boxes. The concave or negative form provides the illusion of movement. It seems when you stand and move about in front of the portraits, that the faces are following you around the room. The work was very well received by the roughly 5,000 visitors for the grand opening last week.
“Seeing the quality, quantity and sheer bold imagination collected in those huge halls at Nordart, I was truly humbled to be part of this,” said Hans. “I came back with a real sense and purpose and what you can make as an artist is not only limited by your imagination, but also by your boldness and guts to dare and go where no one has gone before!’
Nordart is in Rendsburg north of Hamburg Germany and runs until 7th October.
