EXCITEMENT is mounting for Saturday’s Frome Agricultural and Cheese Show which promises entertainment for all the family. Organisers say that last year’s show was arguably the best in its 150 year-plus history and this year’s is shaping up to be an even greater success.
As an added bonus, it is not too late to buy your tickets now in advance from local outlets, which the organisers advise will save as much as a quarter of the cost of entry to the show. A free bus service will also run from Frome town centre.
“This year’s Frome Show, on Saturday 13th September, will provide a packed programme of entertainment,” said show secretary, Brenda Scott. “On the Village Green the Knights of the Damned will be giving a breathtaking display of mediaeval jousting in a tournament which climaxes with the dramatic thundering of hooves as the knights attempt to unhorse each other; Titan the Robot will be strolling around meeting and greeting visitors to the show; the Livestock Village will be a temporary home to hundreds of the finest cattle, sheep and goats in the country; the Main Ring will be thronged with spectators watching the show jumping, scurry racing and other equestrian activities; and if you love food, then the Local and Fine Food Halls will offer you a fabulous choice of traditional, local and more exotic dishes.
“You’ll also be able to buy snacks and lunch from the many catering stands around the Showground while with more trade stands than ever before across the showground, you’ll be able to pick up bargains galore.
“The Cheese Pavilion will have on display the hundreds of different cheeses and other dairy products which will be entered for the Global Cheese Awards and other competitions – and that’s also where you can pick up some great cookery hints from top chef Jean Christophe Novelli.
“Traditional skills, such as stick carving, spinning and weaving and wood and stone carving will be demonstrated on the approach to the Country Pursuits Area where you can watch gun dogs being put through their paces and have a go at archery.
“And if that’s not enough excitement, there’s all the fun of the fair to enjoy.”
A family ticket, which will admit two adults and three children to the West Woodlands showground on Saturday costs £24 if you buy it in advance, compared with £32 on the day. At the same time, you can save £3 on the cost of an individual ticket, while tickets for children between five and 16 could cost you £2 less. Under fives get in free.
“If you’re in Frome you can buy your tickets at the Tourist Information Centre in the library,” added Brenda. “But don’t worry if you’re not, as they’re also on sale at the Tourist Information Centres in Trowbridge, Westbury, Warminster, Melksham, Shepton Mallet, Wells and Bath, from Mole Valley Farmers, Frome, White Row Country Foods at Beckington, Mells Village Shop and Acres Supply Garden & Aquatics in Corsley, as well as from the show office, on the old showfield in Rodden Road, Frome. That’s open 10.00am to 2.00pm.
“But that’s not the only savings you can make thanks to the regular bus service that runs throughout the day to and from the showground. It won’t cost you anything to use the bus and you can board it at the show office, in the Market Place, at Sainsbury’s, Frome Station and in Badcox – there’s a full timetable on the show website.
