FROME has marked 100 years of the Royal British Legion.
To commemorate the centenary, members of the Frome branch gathered outside the Memorial Theatre on Saturday 15th May, for a short ceremony at the town’s war memorial.
Chairman of the Frome branch, Nigel Moore said, “The Royal British Legion’s (RBL) centenary was marked across the country and overseas by over 2,000 branches laying poppy wreaths at their local war memorial on Saturday 15th May.
“Needless to say this key event was much curtailed by the current Covid restrictions, nevertheless the Frome Branch RBL played its part with a short ceremony in which a poppy wreath was laid at the town’s memorial, at the Memorial Theatre.
“As Covid restrictions are gradually lifted and life returns to normal, the branch hopes to mark this momentous occasion in a way that will involve all members and supporters.”
Explaining the history of the RBL, Nigel said, “The Royal British Legion was founded in 1921 in the aftermath of the Great War (World War 1) when four organisations came together to fight the injustices faced by veterans returning home after the war.
“100 years on, the RBL continues this work by providing help, advice, care and support for millions of veterans and their families and by campaigning on their behalf.”
