Frome Town Council is pressing ahead with its plan to make Frome a carbon neutral town by 2030.
The council declared a ‘climate emergency’ in December last year, pledging to explore ways to avoid using fossil fuels such as oil, coal and gas.
As part of the initiative the council is hosting a free event, ‘Frome’s Solar Streets’ on Thursday 28th March at the Town Hall at 7pm for anyone interested in putting solar panels on their roofs.
With each installation saving around 1.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide, it is hoped that at least 100 households in Frome will sign up over the next few months.
Local solar installer IDDEA will be on hand to explain their hugely discounted offer for Frome and to answer any questions. Anna Francis, Frome Town Council’s resilience manager, will also be available to talk about the environmental savings and the benefit to the local community.
“As well as enabling Frome households to cut their energy costs, £50 from each installation will go towards putting free solar panels on the YMCA’s youth centre on Vallis Road,” said Anna,“and there is a £100 referral bonus for anyone who recommends a friend.”
As well as the launch of ‘Frome’s Solar Streets’ project this week, Frome’s mayor, cllr Richard Ackroyd, also signed the town up to the global covenant of mayors last week, linking Frome with hundreds of towns and cities across the globe who have committed to going carbon neutral.
Cllr Ackroyd said, “Achieving this ambition is vital, but hugely challenging. Linking with other places so we can share ideas and projects is a great start. We need everyone to play their part and I would urge anyone interested in reducing their energy bills to attend the event on the 28th.”
