The combined men’s team from Frome Park and Frome Selwood have won the Charity Floodlight Cup.
In the final on Friday evening they played under the lights at Norwest Bowling Club against the home side but still managed to secure a close 3-2 victory.
With four matches completed both sides had two wins apiece, so it came down to the last end of the final match to confirm the winners, so the triple of Terry Joyce, Brian Lye and Mike Mason had to defend a 3 shot lead to secure overall victory; this they did and in fact picked up 2 shots to confirm the win by 18-13.
The other winning triples for Frome were Eddie Maidment, John Curtis and Alan Totterdell with a score of 22-19 and Pete Wheeler, John Pritchard and Steve West who continued their good form in this competition with another comfortable 21-8 win.
At the trophy presentation after the match, one of the competition organisers Bryn Hawkins announced that once again this popular tournament had been played in a very good sporting manner as it always is, and raised another large sum of money for local charities which was thanks to all the bowlers and spectators for contributing on the raffles throughout the two weeks of the competition.
On Saturday the Parks men’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams had an end of season challenge match. This was a good chance for all involved to have some banter and fun with each other, especially after the ‘B’ team had won promotion to East 1 next year and would be playing their own ‘A’ team following their relegation from Premier 2.
On the green the ‘B’ team put up some good competition but it was the ‘A’ team who took the bragging rights by confirming the win with two easy winning rinks skipped by Alan Totterdell and Steve West.
The ‘B’ rink skipped by John Vince claimed their only win after both teams were level going into the last end which the ‘B’s managed to secure the shot and get the victory.
After the match all players enjoyed the buffet spread and had a drink together and can look forward to more challenges again next season. Club president Gordon Lee spoke about how the club was going from strength to strength, the membership has increased and the club spirit was excellent and bodes well for the future.
On Sunday the club held their Captains Day to close the season. This is a fun day with some bowling challenges like target bowls, bowl through cones to an offset jack and get into a bucket in the ditch, these are carried out with lots of enthusiasm and players giving their views on players attempts, all done in a good spirit and a chance for members to have a final get together to finish off the summer on the green.
