Frome Park men had an excellent victory in the Turnbull Cup. An away trip to Weston Bath was always going to be a tough draw, but the team played extremely well and secured the win by 5 shots, final score being 78 to 73.
The club reports, “With two rinks winning well to ensure the win, it sets up a trip to local rivals, Frome Selwood, in the next round. The winning rinks were Peter Wheeler, Eddie Maidment, Kim Pitts & Mike Gulliford 25 – 10 and Norman Seviour, Dave Whitehead, Nigel Hunt & Wayne Pitts 26 – 11.
“In the County league the “A” team have secured a couple of good wins. First an away match at Prattens finished with the Park claiming 8 points, winning by 59 – 54 in a close tight match, thanks to the winning rink of Steve Cantrell, Dave Whitehead, Nigel Hunt & Wane Pitts who scored 14 shots in the last 5 ends, winning 25 – 11.
Then a home match against Alexandra Park; Bath finished with the Park claiming 10 pts with an winning score of 65 – 40. With two rinks drawing, it was the rink of Malcolm Jepson, Dave Whitehead, Nigel Hunt & Wayne Pitts who ensured the victory with a comfortably 33 – 8 win.
The “B” team have unfortunately been struggling recently and have lost heavily to both Imperial and Knowle B.
“In the midweek league, Frome Park men had an outstanding win at home against Shepton Mallet, claiming maximum points, followed by a close home game against City of Wells. Both teams won on two rinks, but the visitors claimed the extra points. winning by 79 – 64. The best rink for Frome was Pete Wheeler, Frank Russell, Nigel Hunt & Dave Whitehead who put in some good bowls to win by 23 – 13.
“The ladies have been steadily improving their form recently, so it was no surprise to see results starting to go their way. In the Wild League, a home match against a strong team from Wyrral Park, Glastonbury, ended in a close defeat but they got back on track in the next game against Street claiming a 48-44 win, mainly thanks to a 22 – 12 win by Val Church, Betty Warren & Olive Maidment. It got even better when the Park Ladies hosted Paulton and produced their best win of the season, claiming maximum points with a huge overall winning score of 82 – 38. The best rink was Viv Lake, Olivia Grant & Jane McLeod who came out on top, 32 – 14.
“The mixed team had a friendly against Shaftesbury, a very enjoyable triples match over 5 rinks but ended in defeat.”
