Frome’s streets, green spaces and surrounding countryside were explored this month as another successful Frome Walking Festival took place from 7th to 9th August.
A total of 220 walkers joined 19 guided walks across the weekend, discovering hidden stories, local heritage and some of the area’s lesser-known routes along the way.
Walks included opportunities to uncover the human stories behind Frome’s Blue and Brown Plaques, explore Rodden Meadow and The Dippy, seek out the lost pubs of Frome, delve into the town’s rich textile history and follow the route of the canal that never was around Coleford. The festival also saw walkers complete the final section of the Outer Frome Walking Wheel, having tackled previous sections over the last three festivals.
Several walks also raised funds for local causes, including Frome Heritage CIC, Keyford Hedgehog Rescue and Rehabilitation and Somerset Earth Science Centre.
Tricia Golinski from the Frome Walkers are Welcome committee said, “The festival is a wonderful way to bring people together to explore Frome and its surroundings at a slower pace. Whether people joined us to learn something new about the town’s history, discover a hidden route, enjoy nature or simply meet fellow walkers, it was fantastic to see so many people taking part. We’re grateful to all the walk leaders, volunteers and participants who helped make this year’s festival such a success. Frome Walkers are Welcome would like to thank Frome Town Council for its support in organising the festival, as well as Frome Selwood Rotary for funding the festival brochure.”
Those who were unable to take part this year can still enjoy many of the routes, with walk descriptions available on the Discover Frome website, offering inspiration for future local adventures.
