THE Inner Wheel Club of Frome invited 60 plus people to come to Chapmanslade Village Hall on the evening of Saturday 9th November.
This was in support of the Piers Simon Appeal ‘School in a Bag’ charity, and president Kate Lewis introduced Luke Simon, the brother of Piers, who sadly died in the Boxing Day Tsunami tragedy in the Indian Ocean in 2004.
Luke set up the Somerset based charity in memory of his brother, and gave a very interesting and moving presentation on how the charity works.
The charity’s aim is to give hope to all the poor, orphaned, vulnerable and disaster affected children who are left after these terrible tragedies occur, and have reached out and helped over 40,000 children to date, and hopefully in 2014 will have reached over 42,000 in 17 countries around the world.
The bags are filled with stationery, equipment and resources that will enable the children to write, draw, colour, calculate, express themselves, but above all learn.
De Barnes and Gwen Barnard and their committee organised the event, and Yvonne Covill gave the vote of thanks. Dennis Barnard conducted the auction and members cooked a typical school dinner of cottage pie and fruit crumble and custard which was delicious.
The evening raised £785.00 for the charity which was fantastic, and everyone had a very enjoyable evening.
Once again the Inner Wheel Club of Frome would like to thank all those people who supported it, and look forward to seeing everyone at their annual ‘Soup & Puds’ event on Saturday 11th January 2014 at Chapmanslade Village Hall. Doors open at 12.00noon until 2.00pm, tickets £7.00.
