LOOKING to get organised ahead of February’s half term? There are a variety of fun events happening in and around Frome to give you something to look forward to.

Here is a roundup of some of them:

The Awesome Studio Holiday Club: Wednesday 14th February

Super Pirates are running a half-day holiday club for kids aged eight to 13. You can expect comic book making, board games, arts and crafts, construction activities, Nerf battles and more. They have joined forces with Lungi Babas to keep your kids well fed. For lunch, children will create their own dish with chef Mahesh. You only need to send them in with a snack.

The holiday club will take place at The Awesome Studio, Station Approach, BA11 1RE, from 10am to 2pm. All staff are qualified and carefully recruited for maximum safety and fun! Spaces are £25 a day. They are also registered with the HAF programme – if your child is entitled to free school meals then they can come to this club for free. Your child’s free space can be booked through the Super Pirates website.

I.G. Sports Coaching: Monday 12th February to Friday 16th February

From fundays to football camps, arts and crafts to cheerleading, there is lots of fun to be had with I.G. sports. They are offering something every day, so check out their schedule for more information. Some camps run from as early as 8am until as late as 5pm – you can choose!

They have secured a number of free places for children who would usually receive free school meals. If you are entitled to a free place and wish to book, please contact: theo@igsportscoaching.co.uk

Liberty Gymnastics Funday: Tuesday 13th February to Thursday 15th February

Liberty Gymnastics are back with their ever-popular half term fundays. Including an action-packed day full of arts and crafts, gymnastics and games, choose from any of the three dates in the middle of the half term. Tickets are going fast, so be quick if you’d like to book your child in! Drop off at 8.45am and pick up at 3pm, or 4pm for £2 extra.

These fundays are open to all school-aged children, as well as both members and non-members of Liberty Gymnastics.

Free tennis in Frome: Tuesday 13th February to Thursday 15th February

Frome Tennis is offering free tennis sessions on the Frome Tennis Club’s Community Courts from 1pm to 3pm on Tuesday 13th and Thursday 15th.

They are informal sessions, so go along and have some fun; all ages are welcome.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe: Thursday 15th February

The Merlin Theatre is putting on a magical showing of this classic film – a treat for half term! Join Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy on their epic adventure, battling dark forces, uncovering ancient prophecies, and discovering the true magic of Narnia. Tickets are just £4.

Little Mix & Taylor Swift Pop & Dance workshop: Thursday 15th February

Tiff will be running a “pop” and “dance” workshop at Danceworks Studio on Thursday 15th February 10am to 1pm for children school year 3 and over. This is an awesome opportunity to come and learn some routines to “Little Mix” and “Taylor Swift”. Dance, perform and singalong.

Frome Potato Day and Seed Swap: Sunday 18th February

The Frome Potato Day and Seed Swap brings together gardening enthusiasts, local businesses, and community groups to celebrate the joys of gardening. With a focus on sustainability, health, education, and community engagement, the event aims to inspire individuals to cultivate their growing spaces and foster a deeper connection to the environment.

This event has become a cherished annual tradition, offering a one-stop-shop for all things gardening. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting, Potato Day provides everything needed to kickstart the growing season.

Taking place at the Cheese and Grain, 10am to 2pm. £3 entry, kids go free!

Poo-Dunnit Challenge at Palette and Pasture: until Sunday 18th February

Fancy adding some hilarity to your half term? Palette and Pasture are running a ‘Poo-Dunnit’ challenge. Go along and see if your child can match the animal to its excrement! Complete your activity sheet, take a photo sat on the throne wearing your crown and collect your prize.

Paint your own pottery at Made at Nest

If you’re looking for something crafty to do with the kids but in your own time, then look no further than Made at Nest. You can choose from a selection of over 100 different ceramic items to paint and enjoy a cuppa and piece of cake in the process. Open Tuesday 13th February to Sunday 18th February.

Go bouldering!

Frome Boulder Rooms are a fantastic option if your kids are climbing-crazy or just starting to take an interest. If you’d rather stay grounded than climb too, supervising adults go free. Open daily, check Frome Boulder Room’s website for timings, pricing and more information.

Take a town trail!

Local charity We Hear You have devised a town trail suitable for families – pick up the trail map for £2 from Frome Town Hall or the Discover Frome point in Frome Library and test your observation skills!

  • Plans to turn former Pizza Hut restaurant into tanning salon approved

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

The former Pizza Hut restaurant in Frome will be turned into a tanning salon after plans were approved.

Pizza Hut operated from Unit 1 of Enterprise House within the Wessex Fields business park in Frome until 2020, closing its doors forever during the coronavirus pandemic.

The unit was subsequently occupied by the Dough & Co pizza company until they in turn vacated the premises in 2022 – with Consol Ltd. applying in late-November 2025 to convert the premises into a tanning salon.

Somerset Council has now given its blessing to these proposals, meaning the new salon could be welcoming customers by the spring.

Enterprise House’s existing tenants include the town’s KFC restaurant, the police enquiry desk and the Dorothy House Hospice Care furniture store.

  • Digital confidence sessions at Frome Medical Practice

A series of digital confidence sessions are being launched by Frome Medical Practice this month.

The free sessions will start on 18th March and are designed to help people feel more comfortable and in control when using everyday technology. Each session will offer a relaxed, welcoming space to learn, chat and ask questions about a range of digital topics.

Digital Community Connector at the practice Will Palmer said, “We have got a list of topics we want to cover in these sessions, from staying safe online and avoiding scams, learning more about digital wearables such as hearing aids, fitness trackers and smart health devices, and finding out how AI can support your health. We are also keen to hear what other sessions people would find helpful too.”

  • The Little Scrapstore relaunches after community support

A scrapstore nestled in the heart of Frome has relaunched following a community effort to reorganise the space.

The Little Scrapstore, run by The Pod Charity, had been closed for two months. During that time, an army of volunteers and Frome Town Rotary helped transform the space, giving materials a second lease of life. Many items were generously donated by Sydenhams.

Mayor Cllr Anita Collier attended the reopening last month to see the revitalised space beneath Frome Museum on Justice Lane.

The Pod Charity manager, Sue Paxton, said, “The result is a calmer, more organised space that is not only more appealing and accessible for customers but also better suited to support the adults with additional needs who are working and learning within the Scrapstore."

  • Have your say on Market Yard toilets

Residents are being encouraged to share their views on the future of the Market Yard toilets.

Since September last year, the public toilet block has been closed, with the Changing Places facility kept open for those who need it. Public toilets are provided at the Cheese and Grain.

The decision was made following Frome Town Council stepping in to prevent permanent closure of the facilities by Somerset Council.

Frome Town councillor Nick Dove said, “We made the decision last July to temporarily close the toilets as they were becoming expensive and difficult to maintain.

“We have asked Somerset Council to provide us with a long lease for the Market Yard block, which would allow us to make changes to the building and now we need to hear from you.”

The Frome Community Bike Project will host the event at The Workshop, Station Approach, on Sunday 22nd March, running from 10am to 2pm.

It promises a lively mix of entertainment and activities and a chance to learn about new and exciting cycling initiatives in the town.

“Amongst the fun cycle powered activities will be a pedal powered rocket challenge with pedal powered music and bubbles!” said Emma Parker from FCBP. “Plus the ever-popular smoothie bike where you can make your own tasty fruit smoothie, and we’ll have the wonderful Mojo Moves to bring the party atmosphere!"

  • Strong start to spring for family support charity

Spring has sprung for family support charity Purple Elephant, with a series of endurance-based fundraising events, including a military-inspired bootcamp and the Bath Half Marathon.

Starting in the dark at 6am on 22nd February the military-inspired bootcamp in Beckington raised £2,000. 110 participants, including children took part in a wide variety of classes.

Led by Optimum Health and Sports Therapy practitioner Lizzie Daschner with fellow fitness fanatics Emily Denham and Mitz Harrington, supporters cheered participants on, donated and joined the raffle to ensure a fun day for all.

Local traffic management and road-surfacing company CH Contracting (South West) Ltd match-funded the move-athon event and have donated a further £2,000.

  • Somerset Council increases precept by 4.99%

Somerset Council has agreed to increase council tax by 4.99% when it met to approve its budget for 2026/27.

At the Full Council meeting on 4th March councillors agreed to increase council tax by 4.99%, meaning the average Band D bill will rise to £1,950.30 per year (an increase of £1.78 per week).

The council says this figure remains lower than the average unitary council, and less than neighbours in Dorset, Wiltshire and Cornwall.

Speaking at the meeting, the leader of Somerset Council, Cllr Bill Revans, said the council is moving from financial emergency into a financial recovery phase.

He said, “Experts agree that this council has grasped the challenges of the financial emergency.

“We have taken the tough decisions needed whilst prioritising care for the most vulnerable and front line services, working in partnership with our business community, city, town and parish councils, the health service, the police and other public sector organisations as well as the Voluntary, Community, Faith, and Social Enterprise sector – and we will continue to do so."

  • Have your say on proposed changes to Frome school system

Residents are being encouraged to share their views as part of an informal consultation into whether Frome schools should move to a two-tier education system.

The Somerset Council consultation ends on 20th March and is seeking residents’ views on Frome schools moving from a three-tier to a two-tier system. If the consultation shows community support, a full statutory consultation with detailed proposals would be developed and launched in June/July.

A two-tier system would mean pupils would join a primary school aged four before moving to secondary school in Year 7. The majority of schools in Frome currently operate a three-tier system, with pupils attending first schools (Reception to Year 4), middle schools (Years 5 to 8) and an upper school (Years 9 to 13).

  • Frome business breakfast with Mayday Saxonvale

A Frome business breakfast is being held at The Cheese and Grain on Thursday 19th March with Mayday Saxonvale.

Frome & District Chamber of Commerce are hosting the breakfast entitled The Future of Frome Business Breakfast.

It is an opportunity for Frome businesses to hear directly from Mayday Saxonvale about their plans for community ownership of the site and the progress they are making in the acquisition of the site from Somerset Council. The group will also share how they can directly engage and help influence the future of the town.

Organisers say the significant development planned across the town raises key questions about balancing business growth, employment space and long-term economic activity with housing and other uses, giving local business owners a stronger voice in shaping the town’s economic future, and ensuring that businesses, talent and investment remain rooted in Frome for the long term.
