Frome welcomed local rivals Corsham to the ‘Lane,’ looking to build on the previous week’s victory in front of a crowd including many of the club sponsors.
Frome started strongly, looking to pin the visitors in their 22 . The pressure was rewarded when Corsham were penalised at the break down and Centre Darrell Thompson struck the resultant penalty to give Frome an early lead.
However the visitors came back strongly and with Frome down to 14 men following a yellow card for a high tackle, they scored a try from a 5-metre scrum through the visitors’ No. 8.
The home side dominated the remainder of the first half and after a number of attempts on the try which were held up, finally retook the lead when Hooker Geoff Taylor crashed over after a catch and drive from a line out, Thompson added the extras.
Frome continued to press, with Centre Mike Rutt and Winger Craig Thompson prominent.
The next score came from a planned move from a Scrum which created space for Winger Ali Frost to score.
The final score of the first half came when Man of the Match, James Howard, crashed over to give Frome a 20 – 5 half time lead.
Frome started strongly in the second half and increased their lead when Flanker Ross Toton scored a well-worked try.
The visitors came back into the game using the slight slope to good effect, pinning Frome back in their 22, however stout defence kept the visitors out until they created space out wide for the Winger to score.
Frome hit back immediately when Prop Keiran Storey brushed aside 4 or 5 defenders to score a converted try under the posts. The Corsham Fly Half scored a breakaway converted try however, but Frome had the final say when Rob James crashed over under the posts for a try, converted by Thompson to complete the scoring.
Head coach, Toby Culff commented, “This was another important and satisfying home victory on one hand, and another frustrating and ‘un-Frome’ performance on the other. We’re great in patches, but only in patches. And for every great patch there’s…..well….to be honest…..a pretty awful one not far behind. The question isn’t whether we’ve good players, or whether we can play good rugby, it’s whether we can find a consistency and concentration that’s so far alluded us this season. We’ll certainly need considerably more of these attributes next week at Devizes, and that’s the challenge for us. I know I’m a hard man to please, but the level of my expectation says a lot about the potential of this player group and my ambition for them. If they’ve the same degree of ambition, they won’t mind the criticism and they’ll respond in the right way. I think we’ll see that response in the week ahead. They deserve enormous credit for their hard work, honesty and determination to improve. And for putting up with their coach!”
On Saturday 26th October Frome travel to Devizes RFC who currently sit one place behind them in third.
