FROME Frog Patrol, a local group run by volunteers dedicated to safeguarding the native amphibian population, is back conducting nightly patrols, helping frogs, toads and even newts reach their annual ancient spawning grounds on the Rodden Nature Reserve, by Asda.
Patrol groups start every evening just after dusk and, as well as helping frogs, toads, and newts across busy roads and rescuing them from drains, they also collect data that helps to assess the health of frog and toad populations throughout the UK.
Frogs, toads and newts play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance but climate change, loss of habitat and pollution have seen populations decline in recent years.
Frome Frog Patrol leader Liz Scott says she is thrilled with this year’s turn out of volunteers, young and old, who turn out in all weathers to do their bit. “They are truly awe inspiring and it’s great to see so many youngsters coming out to help too.”
Earlier this month, Liz also successfully lobbied Frome Town Council for three brand new road signs, which were delivered last week but she says she is still keen to engage as many residents as possible.
“Not everyone may share the same passion for these creatures,” says Liz. “Everyone can support us in some way; driving more cautiously around Asda and Edmund Park until early April, donations of nets, hi-vis, torches and gloves, or even just sharing our Facebook posts. Everything helps!”
